DAYS OF OLD VIENNA

Scenes Recaptured At Beer Garden Party Old Vienna, famed in music and song for the gaiety of its pleasure-loving people, was represented in spirit, at the Viennese beer garden party arranged by the Wellington Operatic Society on Saturday night. Parties of guests in national costumes mingled with dancers In evening dress, creating a scene as novel as it was colourful. Alcoves divided by rose entwined green trellis, flowering creepers, music, and bright lights gave an appropriate setting to tlic society's rooms, where several hundred members and friends gathered. Haunting waltz tunes, the sight of brilliantly-coloured skirts and head kerchiefs, embroidered jackets and shorts helped to convey the impression of a Continental pleasure garden at night. A troupe of singing and dancing “Hungarian’’ gipsy girls, gave a number to the accompaniment of a violin and tambourines. The performers, members of the Young Contingent of the Victoria League, were, Misses Patricia Gledhill, Hilda Webster, Patricia Gillespie, Jean Gilmer, Betty Souter, Patricia Reid, Cora Duncan. Margaret Armour, Margaret Thodey. and Nedva McDonald, and the violinist was Miss Ida Lockwood. Other items included songs by Mr. Ivan Smith, and duets by Mr. and Mrs. H. Hickford.
