News And Notes From Town i • And Country Fellowship At Yale University. Mrs. H. B. Hawthorn, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. G. S. Davidson, Kelburn, with her husband, Mr. H. B. Hawthorn, 8.A., M.Se., and family have left Honolulu for Yale University, where Mr. Hawthorn has been award a Carnegie Fellowship and will be attached to the Department of Race Relations. Both Mr. and Mrs. Hawthorn are specially interested in Maori educational problems and before their departure for Honolulu, where Mr. Hawthorn recently concluded a year at the University of Hawaii (he held a research fellowship in anthropology), were teaching at northern Maori schools. Both studied at Victoria University College. Wahvetu Townswomen. The Waiwetu Townswomen’s Guild held Its July meeting in the Methodist Church Hall, Grenville Street, and there was a good attendance of members. Mrs. Rushton presided and welcomed new members and visitors. The speaker for the afternoon was Miss Lynneburgh, who gave an interesting talk on a holiday spent in Norway. She showed various specimens of beautiful handwork made in that country. After afternoon tea, members of the drama circle of the Lower Hutt guild presented two short plays without words, which caused much amusement Prize-winners On Island Cruise. During the July island cruise of the Maunganui, numerous entertainments were held to keep the passengers both busy and amused, and in the competitions a number of Wellington people figured as prize-winners. These were: In the french ball, Miss B. B. Mclntyre as Joan of Are, Mrs. Olsson as Revolution Hag; fancy dress ball, Misti Mclntyre as a bridesmaid in a bridal group, and Mr. A. F. D. Whiting as Neptune. In the deck sports, Miss M. Parkinson and Mr. J. M. A. Ilott won the mixed doubles, and Mr. Ilott was also among the deck quoits winners. In the dressing race and a sports meeting, the winners were Miss E. Matthews, Gisborne, and Mr. J. B. Chrystall, Palmerston North.
