WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

International Rules Used GAMES ON SATURDAY As the senior A basketball competition was concluded last week, a further round is now being played, using international rules —seven-a-side with two players who play in the centre third and partly in the goal or defence thirds. Some players have had certain practice, as they tried out the kame last year in Australia. It is as well, too, that it should be tried out, as the senior section of the New Zealand tournament in. 1940 will play to these rules, against Australia, who have alwajs played a seven-a-side game. Some of the teams found it difficult to get ahead with this game. Training Colleere drew with Wellington East, chiefly because the College team, who play good basketball, had a technique that 55 ellington East did not achieve. Wellington East stood down their two centre players, V. Stone and J. Wallace. Awatea and Island Bay had a great game finding their feet, ae it was new to them all. Island Bay did best in the first half, leading 10-4, but. then Awatea went ahead to win 21-14. University have withdrawn from the competitions, so Kia Ora had a bye. . „ In the senior B grade Aspro put up a record by scoring 42 goals. Wellington East had a good game against Island Bay, winning by the narrow margin of one goal. Both teams failed to score on several occasions and Wellington East would have done better against A. Freed had they used all three forwards. Island Bay lost ground in the second half by lack of combination m the centre third. .. This is Island Bay s first loss, but it will make no difference to their lead ni the second section. Wellington East have improved too late to make them top, but they may still be second. King’s Birthday Tourney. The last of the King’s Birthday tournament was played in the third grade. Twenty teams entered. Aspro had a great day, winning every game decisively except against Olympic, where there was only one-goal difference. Taupo, leading their section in the weekly competitions, also did well, losing only to Aspro, whom they now have to meet in the final. The last match was played in the deepening dusk between Olympic and Taupo, when the latter won by one goal. The final will be played next week. Aitkens, the other team at the top of a section, lost to Taupo and then to Olympic. There are some very good teams in this grade and play at all times was interesting. Detailed Results Senior A. With two elear-cut victories the Hutt Valley High School team won the annual quadrangular tourney which concluded at Lower Hutt on Saturday. The other three teams in the tourney represented Wellington East Girls’ College and Dannevirke and Wairarapa High Schools. The winning team was as follows: — Misses M. Marwick. D. Dowland, J. Hunter, N. Butt, J. Campbell, .1. Burr, N. Browne, B. Campbell and B. Mackissack. Last year’s tournament, the first of the series, was played at Wairarapa and won by Wairarapa High School. Saturday's games were played in a gusty wind which gave the players trouble iu passing and goal shooting. The first game, between Dannevirke and Wairurapa, the losers of Friday, was a fast one, but Wairarapa held an advantage from soou after the start. The final score was 14-7 in Wairarapa’s favour. The final between Hutt Valley and Wellington East was a bright, interesting exhibition in which the Hutt Valley girls / excelled themselves. The wind made goalthrowing at the western end very difficult, and the number of goals scored was very high considering this. Hutt opened the scoring early and soon led 8-2. The half-time score was 13-4, aud at full-time Hutt had 17 goals to Wellington’s 8. Next year's tournament is to be at Dannevirke.
