MEN’S HOCKEY

Bright Games Played At Weekend KARORI I’s BIG SCORE Karori I ran up a Mg. score, 10-1, acainst Huia IX in the senior first div - sion of the men’s hockey at the weekend. Playing a sound game, Karon proved ab toother too strong.. Karon II also 'scored a win, 4-0, against W c? drew, 1 all, against Technical. Huia I beat Huia HI, 4 goals to 2. Play in most games was blight, teams having improved tremendously all round since the start of the season. Hie two Karori teams showed fine combination, narticularly in the forwards. Though the grounds were greasy, conditions were Cue, "with, however, a gust? wind making play rigorous lor the backs and goalkeepers. Karori Too’ Good For Huia Karori J proved altogether too strong for Huia 11, whom they beat by 10 to 1 at Hutt Park. Karori p ayed a competent and efficient game, their forwards particularly combining well in many polished movements. However, it was Huia who scored first goal, when Alexander ■netted early in the game after a strong attacking movement. CLhis was the sole •Huia score. Karori now assumed the offensive, and before the interval, established a lead of four, their scorers being Edwards, M. Browne (2), Neate, and h. In the second half, Karori continued ,o overrun their opponents, and to lengthen their lead. As is often the case in such runaway games, interest flagged slightly, and the standard of the play tended to deteriorate. Huia kept up their defence well in disheartening circumstances, but goals were scored for Karori by M* Browne (2), Roberts (2), and Edwards. The Karori attack relaxed somewhat toward the close of the game. Umpires were Messrs. C. Harvey and H. Martin. Fast, Open Game Karori II had the best of a fast, open game at Hutt Park, in which they beat Wesley by 4 goals to nil. The difference in scores, however, was not an indication of the nature of the game, the two sides being well matched. Wesley started byplaying, for the greater part of the first half, a solid defensive game, handicapped by Jack of a goal-keeper. Karori, however, played an outstanding forward game, their passing .and stickwork showing considerable finish. Fuller scored twice, and Hull once, for Karori in the first half. Wesley were hard put to it in the early stages to keep the score from mounting higher. Shortly after the interval, however, the game began to go the other way, and Karori were kept on the defence in their own territory. Two Wesley movements came near to scoring. Later, however, their offensive waned, and Karori sent a fine forward movement, away, culminating in Fuller ne.ttiug. Though there was no further score, the remainder of the game " went in Kurori’s favour. The standard of play, except in the first quarter of an hour, was high .and the game a bright one. ' Umpires: ’Messrs. H. F. Bolland and . A. G. Williams. Technical Draw With Hutt In a fast game played on Karori Park on -Saturday Technical held Hutt to a draw —1-all. The score, however, was iio indication of the play. The combination of 'both teams’ was good. The Hutt forwards were outstanding and pressed', the Technical goal all through the game. Technical’s backs formed a stronjr defence. In the first spell, Hutt held the territorial advantage and the ball seldom went near the Tech nical twenty-five. In spite of their determined attack, Hutt failed to score in the first spell. The beginning of the second spell found Technical again on the defence. After several onslaughts, E. McLeod netted for Hutt from a goal melee. Technical then rallied, and play was centred about Hutt’s goal for a short time, during which T. Garbett scored for Technical. Technical brightened at the end of the second spell, but were unsuccessful in trying to score the decisive point, the game ending in a draw- —1-all. Umpires: W. Purves andS. B. Browne. Huia I Win Bright Game It was not for want of trying that Huia 111 lost to Huia I at Nai Nai on Saturday. A promoted team, they put up a good performance in keeping the score down to 4-2, and they liad their opponents in- the run several times, only lacking the finish to goal. The game started: at a fast clip, and the Huia IH wings took advantage of the slowness of the opposing forwards in settling down. Several penetrating expeditions into their territory brought home to the older team that the match was going to be no walk-over, and they began to adopt bustling tactics which slowed down the attack. Two goals came to Huia I in quick succession shortly before half-time, Blick and Jackson being the scorers. After half-time the pace began to tell and the experience of the older team showed in their greater co-operation. Dentice 'brought the score up to 3-0, and then Huia I appeared to begin to take matters more easily. Their folly was brought home to them when Williamson goaled -from a penalty'bully. The same player scored again after the opposition had been kept in their own territory for some time. With only one goal difference the game was very interesting, each side playing hard, fast hockey. Just on time Kelly (Huia I) shot the -best goal of the match from a sharp angle, making the final score: Huia I 4, Huia 111 2. Umpire: Mr. C. Gardiner.
