A quaint incident aboard an intuitgrant ship on her way to New Zealand I in .1840, as related by the. ship's doctor. I watt mentioned by Professor .7. RulhiTI ford in a lecture in Auckland. HearI iug a commotion forward, the doctor and others found a struggling and protesting man suspended in tin open hatchway by a rope aroud his waist. The other end of the rope was held by a party of men, who explained that the victim had been found battering his wife, and they had decided to punish him. The officers ordered the man to 'be hauled up, and admonished the others for taking the law into their own hands. Investigations showed that the wife had brought the trouble on I herself by incessant, nagging, and up- | parently nothing further was done i about the matter.
