VETERAN BOWLERS
Centre Entertains Old Players HUTT’ FOUR TAKES TROPHY Yesterday the Wellington Bowling Centre entertained players of the game aged 70 or over at the annual veterans day. Thirty-four fours enjoyed an afternoon’s bowls on the greens of the M elhngtoii Bowling Club hi sunny, pleasant weather, the cool wind not being sufficient to mar the games. The Hutt four consisting of S. Muter, H. GBrooks, AV. Hendry and R. Y. Shearer won the Shallcrass trophy, obtaining thF biggest' win of the afternoon. A four consisting of nearly the same players won last year. The oldest/fiian on the greens was believed to be S. AV. Lodge, the lead of one of the Eastbourne fours. It consisted ot Lodge, P. Levi, "H. E. Gilbert and J. Battersby, whose ages aggregate 328 years. -, » AVelcoming the players, the president of'the centre, Mr. M. J. Casey, first referred to the veterans who had died since the previous veterans’ day. The trophy, be said, was inaugurated in 1924 by Mr. S. Potter, who was not a veteran at that time, but was playing yesterday. In the intervening years some wonderful gatherings had been held. Judging by the increase in the entries, more greens than the "two of the AVellington club would be required next year. Ift did not agree that the age should be raised. Mr. Casey concluded by calling for three cheers by the veterans for the veterans, which were heartily given. Congratulating Hendry on behalf .ot the winning Hutt four at the conclusion of play, Mr. Casey remarked that the same four h.ad won the previous year, except that" Bebington had replaced Shearer. Mr. Casey thanked the club for providing the greens, Messrs. P. Christensen, B. Thompson, S. Ingram and A. Cathie for decorating the pavilion, the secretary, Mr. A? F.
