Diet For The Career Woman
TIN WISE eaters are often "career women,” ami, from the junior typist to the executive, they are apt to play havoc with their digestions. But if it is pointed out to them that beauty is directly dependent on a health-giving diet a change of habit can often lie seen. Every woman will admit the importance of looking attractive, for, though you may have a magnificent brain and a heart of gold, ]>eople are less likely to care about discovering your finer qualities if they are hidden away under an attractive exterior.
The secret of a good complexion is fruit and vegetables. Most women who work find it more practicable to have a fairly light meal, in the middle of the day and keep the more itnportant meal for the evening. Rich pastry dishes, suet puddings, and so on, should be avoided at lunchtime, for they give a heavy sleepy feeling not conducive to hard work. Salads and Soups. TNSTEAD, there are salads, now made in so many varieties that it is almost impossible to tire of them, and when something warm is wanted there are vegetable soups, fish dishes, cutlets, and vegetables, all of which are nourishing without being heavy. Should the lunch hour be cut down to about 10 minutes, it is much wiser to have a glass of milk, or one of the popular milk foods, and a sandwich — preferably made with wholemeal bread, eaten slowly, than to gallop through the lunch menu and have indigestion.
The evening meal should be enjoyed in peace when work is finished, and even the woman who lives alone can have plenty of variety. All she needs is a gas ring, a tin opener, and some imagination. Plenty of meat should be her motto . . . and not always fried, although this is a temptation, for it is th° easiest as well as one of the most tasty methods of cooking. And let her experiment with fish . . . she will be surnrised at the wonders which can be performed with one saucepan.
A milk pudding, made with milk and fresh eggs, is always nourishing. Stewed and uncooked fruit are excellent. both from a dietetic and beauty viewpoint, while bananas, particularly can be made quickly into attractive sweets.
Simply cut them in half, place them on a fiat sponge cake, cover thinly with strawberry jam, and add whipped cream. There you have nourishment as well as an attractive dish.
