HAWKE’S BAY GALLOPS

Red Witch And Stern Chase

Go Fast Dominion Special Service. HASTINGS, January 12. Boisterous winds made conditions unpleasant this morning at Hastings when most of the Ashhurst and Trentham candidates were out, but not many were seriously galloped. The strong wind did not materially affect the times as down the back the gallopers were assisted by it, though in the run home it retarded them somewhat. The speedy Hunter's Eve lived up to her reputation bv scampering over three furlongs in 36 l-o, pulling up quite sound. Master Cyklon ran a solid and 'w™ three-quarters of a mile, registering I.lb. Quilp, who has slightly improved, in company with Tiger Gain, sprinted five furlongs in 65. Tiger Gain appears about back to his best. Tareha, second at Hastings to Patches in the Highweight Handicap, appears in the pink of condition. This morning he bowled along over two rounds in rare style. Brunhild, with Atkins in the saddle, went totally differently from her effort ou Tuesday, this time going decidedly better than Hunting Mint over half a mue in 5 2 - The full-sisters, Hinerangi and B elicitation, were restricted to 52 for four furlongs. The veteran trainer, Tom Quinlivan, has them in great heart, but neither may race till Wanganui. Nora Gregor was not allowed her head when running four furlongs in 52, the same applying to her stable companion Ivar, who took 1.22 for six. Centrepoise, after jogging two rounds, came home the last three in 43. He is to take his place in the Douro Cup field, all going well. Two Wellington highweight candidates, Lady Stella and Boatsong, took 1.444 for a working gallop once found, With Boatsong going the better if anything. Thrasher ran six furlongs in 1.24. He is booked for Aehhurst, but may require a race or two before he returns to -his spring winning form. The best gallop of the morning went to the credit of Red Witch (Mudford.) and Stern Chase (Atkins), who, finishing abreast, recorded 63 for five furlongs, the first two in 234 and three in 354 when assisted by the wind. However, the gallop was impressive. Sir Nigel, looking better -than for the last two seasons, against the bit recorded 1.18 for six furlongs. Endorsement, Sleeveless and Flying Flag finished in that order at half-length intervals after three furlongs in 87. The first two will go to Trentham and Flying Flag is booked for Ashhurst. Buster Brown took 54 for a half-mile working gallop. The first batch of Hawke's Bay yearlings for the National sales left here this morning. The general impression is that they are the best lot for some years. With the Siegfried—Lovelock colt and the Bulandshar youngsters the Bay has a chance of repeating last season’s record and topping the list again.
