Smallpox In New Zealand

(From “The Dominion,” July 12, 1913.)

The first definite statement from the Health Department that the epidemic among the Maoris in the Auckland province is the same disease as that declared to be smallpox in Sydney, was made bv the Minister of Public Health, Hon. R. 11. Rhodes, in the House of Representatives last night. The Inspector-General of Hospitals, Dr. Valintine, was in the chamber when the Minister made the announcement.

Large insurances have been effected in Londoj on mills in Ulster, to cover the risks from' civil war and riots, in consequence of the passing of the Home Rule Bill."

Reuter's correspondent states that the Balkan war has now been regularised by formal declarations. The Powers, it is stated, content themselves with an expression of strong disapproval of the resumption of fighting, but make no attempt to mediate.
