EXODUS OF NURSES

Reason For Shortage In

New Zealand

“There is a general shortage of trained nurses throughout New Zealand,” said the director of the nursing division of the Health Department, Miss M. I. Lambie, yesterday, “but the position in Wellington is better than in any of the other main centres.’’

Miss Lambie stated that 370 nurses completed their training last year. Although there had been a shortage of nurses during the past three years, the total number trained last year was the highest for that period. Miss Lambie explained that the exodus of nurses to England and Australia was the direct cause of the present shortage. Lust year more than 120 nurses left New Zealand, and since April 1 58 others bad departed. Hospitals bad increased both In size and numbers, and this had accentuated the problem. Miss Lambie said that the position was now improving- and should be greatly relieved by the end of the year, when the nurses now in training completed their examinations.
