NATIONS’ AIR FORCES
The Great Powers are feverishly re-arming. To obtain accurate figures of the air forces of the several nations is very difficult, if not Impossible. The following, however, gives the appropriate position of the first-line forces, Britain has 1680 first-line aeroplanes. The “F” scheme, begun in 1935-36, was for 1750 first-line machines by March, 1939. According to the new “L” scheme just announced this is to be increased to 3500 by 1940.
A year ago Germany had 1600 firstline aeroplanes. To-day the figure is 3500, of which about 2200 are bombers. Experts estimate that by 1940 Germany could have more than 6000 first-line machines.
France’s first-line machines number 1550. A strength of 2500 is aimed at for next year. Italy has 1600 first-line aeroplanes. Believed now to lie aiming at a strength of 3500 machines. Russia’s air strength is shrouded in mystery, but there is little doubt that her air force is now the largest In Europe,
