PACIFIC AIR ROUTE
Removal Of Pan-American Base From Pago Pago
By Telegraph—Press Association.
Auckland, July 8.
The removal of one of Pan-American Airways’ bases on the South Pacific air route from Pago Pago, American Samoa, to either Canton Island or Rose Island is suggested by reports brought to Auckland by the liner Monterey. It was stated that the base at Pago Pago will be retained as an emergency landing area and perhaps as a stores and overhaul depot on American soil.
Mr. F. McKenzie, Pacific division airport engineer for Pan-American Airways, who was in Auckland unti) early this year and who supervised the construction of the base in Mechanics Bay, was recently at Pago Pago making arrangements for the transfer, the reports said. There was some doubt as to whether or not the transfer had yet been completed, although it is known in Auckland that the radio Installation at Pago Pago has not been removed.
