String Group Presentations

The string group of the Wellington branch of the British Music Society met recently and presented movements from concertos for violin, viola and piano. The sciolists were Miss May Hyirm, Mrs. Eric Meier and Mr. Keith Picton. who played movements by Vivaldi, Handel and Mendelssohn respectively. The accompaniments were supplied by a good attendance of members. The chamber music comprised quartets for clarinet, piano and strings (Rabi), played by Mr. and Mrs. D. W. McKenzie, Mrs. A. C. Keys and Mr. G. Ayson; for flute and strings (Mozart), by Messrs. J. Rodgers, R. Davies, Dr. A. C. Keys and Miss Violet Wood; and a Haydn string quartet by Messrs. Davies, Logan, Lomas and Dr. Keys. The final number wag. a toy symphony by Haydn for strings, two voices and toy instruments. The voice parts were sung by Miss Olga Buston and Mrs. Keys. The toy drums, trumpets, triangle, rattles and birds caused much amusement, and fittingly’ terminated an enjoyable evening. Others who assisted were: Mr. W. Page (president, 8.M.5.), Mrs. D. W. Woodward, Mr. O. Jones, Miss O. Burton (violins), Mrs. J. T. Campbell, Miss M. Meier (violas) and Miss HaddonJones and Mr. D. Woodward (cellos). Piano Recitals. Three recitals formed the programme for the British Music Society’s Piano Group meeting which was held recently, led by Miss Ngaire Murphy. Mr. Lionel Harris, the first recitalist, chose delightful numbers from the works of Bach, Brahms, and Chopin. Miss Shirley Craig played a Schubert sonata, a descriptive piece by Schumann find some modern numbers by Cyril Scott and Percy Grainger. Mr. Paul Magill, the third performer, played a varied bracket of Mendelssohn, Rubenstein, Sibelius and Liszt.

After the musical programme a general meeting was held to elect officers for the coming year, Miss Lorna Black acting irs chairman. A vote of thanks was tendered to the retiring secretary and committee for their good work during the past year. Miss Ngaire Murphy was re-elected to the position of secretary, and as a result of a ballot the following were elected to the committee Misses Dorothy Buck, Shirley Craig, Dorothy Downing, Patricia Inns, Catherine Moncrieff and Mr. K. Picton. Despite the wet weather, there was a splendid attendance of members and friends, and among those present were: Mesdames Downing, Hardy and Magill. Misses M. Dixon, W. Amos, D. Knapp, Eileen Watts, J. Marchant, M. Moleta, H. Smith, Messrs. C. Morrison, J. McGill and H. Arnold.
