MUCH TRAVELLED

Rider Haggard's New Zealand Cousin “All the members of my family were more or Jess brought up on Rider Haggard’s books, so I have always been interested’ in Africa,”, said Miss N. G. Gray, a New Zealander, who arrived at Sydney in the Anchises last week. Miss Gray, who is a cousin of the late Sir H. Rider Haggard., has travelled extensively in Africa, although’ on this trip she only visited the south. “My cousin was always very interesting to talk to because he had such a tremendous imagination and so many tales to tell,” said Miss Gray. One of the most interesting parts of my trip was the visit to the Premier diamond mine, near Pretoria, where all the mining is done close to the surface, and you. can see the diamonds flashing in the sun. I also went down one of the deepest goldmines in the worjd. We had to wear very old clothes, as all the passages dripped with water. White men working in the mines receive a wage of about £4O a month.” Miss Gray said she was very impressed with the prosperity of the people in South Africa. Houses are going up everywhere, and many are favouring the picturesque Dutch styles, with white wall and red stoeps. Miss Gray, who first started travelling when she was a year old, has lived in 27 different countries.
