BIRTHDAY PARTY

Gathering At The Blind Club Committee members of the Social Club for the Blind and friends met at the club’s rooms in Dixon Street on Wednesday to honour their oldest member, Mrs. Kate King (widow of the late Mr. Alfred King), who was celebrating her 92nd birthday. Sixty were present. Mrs. King was presented with a beautiful bouquet and was the recipient of gifts from the blind club and friends. A beautifully iced birthday cake decorated with nine large candles an'd two small ones was cut by Mrs. King and afternoon tea was served. The opportunity to welcome home Mrs. Knox Gilmer, the club’s president, was taken. Mrs. ‘Gilmer, who was the recipient of a lovely bouquet, gave a short talk on her recent travels abroad. This was mudh appreciated by the blind members. Descriptions of various blind institutions visited were of very special interest to all. Songs by Mrs. Gardiner and recitations by Miss Clarice Brown were well received, and competitions for the blind were won by Miss A. Wilson and Mr. Constable. Home Of Compassion The Home of Compassion and its splendid work for the alleviation of distress and the care of those unfortunates, who through no fault of their own, require institutional care, is well known to the people of Wellington. Poverty and suffering, without distinction of creed or nationality, is the sole condition of admission to the home. Altogether some 160 patients of widelydiffering ages and types are given the greatest care by a band of zealous women who have devoted their lives without reward to this charitable work. It will be understood that the annual maintenance of such a large institution is very heavy, and as the institution has no fixed annual income or endowments to draw upon, the Sisters are entirely dependent on the generosity of the charitably disposed. An opportunity will be given next Thursday for the public of Wellington to show their appreciation of this great community service, and it is hoped that, the street-day appeal will find a cordial response. Anyone outside Wellington wishing to contribute towards the success of the appeal, are invited to forward donations to the Home of Compassion, Island Bay. Birthday Greetings A happy birthday party was held at the D.I.C. tearoom yesterday afternoon, the guest of honour being Master John Sutherland, the other guests being fel-low-pupils of the upper form at Croydon School, Day’s Bay. The tea table was bright and attractive, and there were paper caps for all the guests. A feature of the party was the birthday cake, on which were 13 candles, it being the principal guest’s thirteenth birthday. Mrs. Skelley, wife of the principal of the school, and Mr. G. McConnell, the boys’ form master, were present in the unavoidable absence of Mrs. W. A. Sutherland. Those present to wish John “Many Happy Returns of the Day,” were Miss Claudia Skelley, and the following boys: A. Miles, D. Bush, A’. Lewis, M. Markman, H. Abel. R. Cook, D. Sutherland, R. Grundy, W. Day, M. Sailer, D. Sinclair, J. Simpson, K. Barton. Berhampore Kindergarten The twenty-first birthday party of the Berhampore Free Kindergarten will be celebrated this afternoon and all who are interested are cordially invited to be present. The main attraction of the afternoon will be the official opening by Mr. D. C. Peacock, of the newly glassedin veranda. Afternoon tea will be served in the main schoolroom and all will be afforded an opportunity to inspect the building and grounds, which are well worth seeing. It is hoped that a good many friends will come along to the kindergarten, Stanley Street, on this occasion to wish the kindergarten “many happy returns.” Returned Home Mr. and Mrs. J. G. S. Thompson. Lansdowne, MasFSrton, have returned from a holiday at Paraparaumu. Mrs. George McLean has returned to Hawera after a visit to Wellington. Miss Amabel Horton, Wellington, who has been the guest of Mrs. D. Murchison, Timaru, has returned home.
