TRAVEL TALK

Address At EnglishSpeaking Union

So many people who desire to travel are denied the opportunity and must content themselves with listening to the tales of ther travellers. Yesterday afternoon, when the English-Speak-ing Union held its monthly ladies’ gathering, a large number of people were able to hear Mrs. P. V- Miles, who spoke on her recent visit to Europe. She described her journey through Belgium, Germany and the Black Forest, through Bavaria and up the Danube. She spoke of the lovely flowers that are to be seen everywhere in Belgium and Germany which look so gay in spring and summer, and are like a Christmas card in winter. “The Black Forest.” she said, “is really black, because of the dark trunks of the millions of fir trees.” Mrs. Miles also told of some of the amusing, and sometimes embarrassing, adventures in a country where they cannot speak the language of the people. The English-Speaking Union rooms had been beautifully decorated for the occasion. On the piano, above the E.'S.U. banner, was a huge bowl of belladonna lilies and pastel pink dahlias. Round the walls on high stands were bowls of mauve, violet and deep blue hydrangeas and about the room were vases of mimosa, dahlias and asters. The visitors were received by the chairwoman of the ladies’ social committee, Mrs. E. D. Good, the secretary, Mrs. G. H. Perry, and members of the committee. The English-Speaking Union creed was read and afterward Mrs. Good extended a welcome to new members and introduced Mrs. Miles. During the afternoon songs were sung by Mrs. P. Pay, who was accompanied by Mrs. T. Kindred. An attractive tea was served by Mrs. Vinsen, Mrs. Parr and Mrs. H. Ainslee, who were assisted by an energetic committee.
