Travel Club Reception To Visitors The Valin lounge of the Hotel St. George was beautifully decorated with asters, gladioli, french marigolds, and dahlias last night, when the ’Wellington Travel Club gave a reception to the “Reso” tourists from Victoria. The many guests were received by Mr. G. G. Stewart, chairman of the executive of the club, and Mrs. Stewart. They were assisted by the hostesses, Miss Amy Kane,' Mrs. T. M. Donovan, Mrs. J. S. Vinsen, Mrs. Hepburn Dick, and Miss. N. E. Donovan. The visitors were welcomed by Mr. Stewart on behalf of the club, by the mayor, Mr. T. C. A. Hislop, on behalf of the city. by the Hon, F. Langstone, Minister in Charge of the Tourist Department, on behalf of the Government; and by Mr. J..L. Menzies, assistant Australian Trade Commissioner. Mr. Hislop, in expressing his great pleasure at welcoming the visitors, referred to the “extraordinary” name under which this party was touring. “I thought it wa s extraordinary,” he said “until I discovered thiit ‘Reso’ was’the beginning of ‘resource,’ which in its turn is the beginning of ‘resourcefulness.’ ” He referred to the resourcefulness of these 62 travellers from Victoria, to their spirit of inquiry, and their aim to study the development of resources for the benefit of mankind generally. Mr. Hislop also spoke of the strong ties binding the Australian and New Zealand people. “The Anzac Corps, which lives immortal, has built up for us both a united devotion to a great ideal,” he said. “The unity of the two countries is expressed by the of members of the old New Zealand forces which is shortly to leave in order to have the inestimable privilege of marching on Anzac Day in Sydney beside their former comrades. We hope that on Anzac Day in 1940 1000 Australians will march through the streets of Wellington.” The Hon. H. H. Olney, member of the Legislative Council of Victoria and leader of the party; replied, expressing the great pleasure of the visitors at being in New Zealand. Mr. Lester Smith, also pf the party, said how much they appreciated the warm welcome they have received from the New Zealand people. ~ , A delightful interlude was provided bv a party of Maoris under the leadership of Mr. king! Taliiwi. Men and girls in piu-pius sang’Maori songs, performed hakas and did poi dances which charmed the visitors. . . ' I ■ . The final speaker of the evening was Mrs Edith Watson, world correspondent of the “Travel” magazine, who gave an amusing account o£ some of her adventures in Naples ami Australia and concluded by wondering what New Zealand has in store for her. At suppertime the Australian visitors had an opportunity of meeting the members of the travel club. During the evening Mrs. 8. Kennedy sang to the accompaniment of Miss Dorothy Spinks.
