OHANGA’S CUP

Opunake Club’s Meeting DANCING LADY’S SPRINT Dominion Special Service. Hawera, March 12. ’The Opimake Itacing Club’s annual meeting was held on Saturday in brilliant sunshine, before a record crowd. The going was firm and fast, and keen and interesting racing was a feature of the.fixture. The totalisator investments were £11,232/10/- for eight races, compared with £BSO2 for seven races last yeax, an increase of £2430/10/-. Hurdle Winner’s False Price. Kentucky Song was allowed to go out at a false price for the Patiki Hurdles, and, after tailing the field to the straight entrance, finished best to score handsomely. She was deft several lengths at the start. Royal Fire made play practically all the way, and the placed horses rose at the last fence on terms. Booklaw was ridden a quiet race but did not finish with his customary (lash. Davistock lost valuable ground at each fence, but he should profit from the experience. Easy for Favourite. Backers of the favourite, Gold Glare, had few anxious moments in the Maiden Race, for he began very smartly from the rails position and led all the way. He was followed across the top by Golden Orchid, Tomoana, Jakara, Narrator and Trilitha. There was little between Gold Glare and Golden Orchid into the straight, but over the final stages Gold Glare ’came away to score with ease. Trilitha finished fast into third place, half a length away. Narrator was fourth, followed by Tomoana, Cytos and Blab. The winner is a good galloper and more will be heard of him in the future. Trilitha came home strongly after losing ground at the start and is a likely improver.

Sprint to Dancing Lady.

Aided by a brilliant jump-out from No. 1 position, Dancing Lady led all the way in the Flying Handicap and just lasted long enough to hold off her stable-mate Race Call. After a furlong Dancing Lady was well clear of Race Call, with a gap to Notium, just ahead of Clessamor. Uhe field raced in the above order to the straight, where Race Call then put in his claim, but Dancing Lady, fought him off. to win by a head. Notium was a moderate third and Clessamor last. Dancing Lady owed her victory to the fine horsemanship of C. G. Goulsbro, who piloted his second successive winner.

Daisy Ciiain Finishes Well.

It was with a brilliant finishing run that Daisy Chain got up to snatch victory on the post in the Electric Hack HandiAmoroso and Lifeguard began best and led into the straight from Advance Plane, Race Camp and Daisy Chain, wide out. Race Camp hit the front at the distance, but Daisy Chain came “from the clouds in the last few strides to gain the verdict by a neck. Amoroso battled on for third just ahead of Adavnce Plane. Next to finish were Tomoana and Lifeguard. Daisy Chain proved herself a smart mare and registered a .meritorious performance. The favourites Amoroso find Lifeguard stopped badly when the pressure was applied. Race Camp may be an early winner.

Cup to Ohanga.

In a slowly-run race for the cup, Qhanga ran past the pacemaker, Red Sand, at the straight entrance, and held off a latd run by Naughty Marietta to win narrowly. Red Sand showed the way past the stands -from. Ohanga, with Taitoru, pulling hard, and Naughty Marietta handy. There was no change to the- straight, where Ohanga took charge, and momentarily looked an easy Winner, but was all out at the post to defeat the fast-finishing Naughty Marietta, by a head. Taitoru was a fair third, just ahead of Red Sand. The winner has been racing consistently in hack company and his victory whs well deserved. Red Sand stopped badly. Golden Orchid Scores. Improving on her second earlier in the day, Golden Orchid finished attractively from the rear to win the Juvenile Handisap. * Ruling Lady wits first out and led to the home turn from Eafner, Wynardo and Captain Blight, with St. Cedric at the head of the others, antLGolden Orchid last. The first-named quartet entered the straight practically together, and Captain Bligh forged ahead inside the last furlong, but Golden Orchid and Narrator came fast on the outer for the former to win by a head, with Captain Bligh a similag, distance back. Wynardo was fourth and then came Fafiicr and St. Cedric. Student Prince Easily. Patiently ridden by W. J. Broughton, Student Pripce scored an overdue tory in the President’s Hack Handicap. He waited on the leaders, Bonny Glow and Shangri La, to the straight,-where he shot between the pair and the. issue was soon beyond doubt. Shangyi La hung on well considering it was his first race over a distance, and he appears a useful hack. The remainder were well beaten. Another Close Finish. The Farewell Hack Handicap provided another close finish, when Gold Glare snatched victory on the post to complete his second success during the day. Amoroso and Lifeguard were most prominent to the straight from Gold Glare and Silver Gift. Amoroso was still the lea.der a few yards from the post, Gold Glare got up to beat him by a nose. Silver Gift was a moderate third, and High Test fourth. Gold Glare emulated the deed of'his full-brother, Corowa, who won both races two years ago. High Test never threatened danger.
