FAVOURITES’ DAY

CartertoD Races CUP TO LUCULLUS LAD Roaming Wins The Sprint

(By

CAHBINE.)

There was a large attendance at the annual meeting of the Carterton Racing Club on Saturday. The weather was delightful, and’ the outing was most enjoyable. Speculation -was brisker thun usual. The 1 totalisator handled £9019 10/-, against £7872/10/- last year, an increase of £1747, dr about 22 per cent. Favourites had a big day, winning six of the eight races. The cup fell to , Lueullus Lad, and the Bunny Memorial to Roaming, both of whom looked particularly well. Another winner whose well-trained appearance gained him many friends was Sunee, who carried top weight to victory in the Carrington Highweight. T , The best dividend of the day was paid by Ilion, who failed in the hack six, but won the hack five a couple of hours later. Ilion is owned by Mr. David Donald, a well-known Wairarapa resident, who expected her to'do better than she had done in the past, but must have been disappointed by her failure on her first appearance. Top weights did well, winning half the programme. When Alloa won the Carterton Hack Handicap he lost his right to race in hack company in the future, except that he may fulfil hack engagements which have been made for him at Trentham and Awapuni. Australian-bred Winner. Piastre wag made favourite for the Maiden Plate, but was beaten into fourth place after being handy to the leaders all the way. , x White Lady, Allmetic and Great Quex led to the straight from Piastre and Lady Baron. ’White Lady took charge as soon as heads were turned for home, and ran on nicely to win comfortably by a length from Allmetic,' with Great Quex another length away third, then Piastre, Valiant and Girl Pat. ■White Lady carries the colours of the Trentham trainer H. B. Lorigan, and is Australian-bred, being' by Tippler from Valley. She is a better galloper than most of those she met, and will improve. Piastre, Allmetic and Girl Pat, all of whom were well backed, were unimpressive. Topweight Scores. 1 ■ Sunee was' too good for the lot opposed to him in the Carrington Highweight Handicap. He trailed the field for mote than half the journey and then ran round them to. win by a neck, with a little in hand, from Southern Blood, who was hard ridden.' Camilla Horn, who was a leader to the straight, was a close third, and Lady Siegfried was fourth. After these came Umpire and Twilight Song. The Cup. Claiming a 51b. allowance, Lueullus Lad went to the front soon after the start of 1 the Wairarapa County Cup. Along the back he.drew out and put a break ot several lengths on the field, an advantage which he held to the end. Helen lord and Hazoor were prominent most of tne way, and with five furlongs to go Good Sun was last and losing ground. Hazoor did not run on well, and Lueullus nad went on for a thrtfe lengths victory over Helen- Ford, with Cricket a good third ■and Good Sun running, on strongly in fourth place. Hazoor was last. At Short Price. Alloa touched a short price in the Carterton Hack Handicap, but the result ‘'"ifion' 1 anil Money Raid made the running, with Quake and Dancing Flame handy and Alloa last. Nearing the straight Alloa made a fast run on the outside. - Hg soon hit the front and was two lengths clear crossing the line. Dancing Flame was second, a length and a half in-front of Quake. The other runners were Money Raid and Ilion. Alloa is much improved and is nt ana seasoned. . , The Open Sprint. Still another favourite scored when Roaming led the way home in the Bunny Memorial Handicap. Mister Quex led to the straight, where Roaming, who had been well placed all the way, , can \ c through and went on to win by a length from Myriatp and Liane, who were separated by the narrowest of margins. Buster Brown was fourth. Roaming won well, but Buster Brown was unlucky in the running and was checked in the straight when endeavouring to go through between Liane and Myriam. ' . , Double-figure Dividend. There was a good pool on the Electric Hack Handicap, in which Conversion was a better favourite than Free Gold and Diamond Cutter. Ilion and Hunting Spy made tlie early running, but Hunting Spy was done with nearing the straight. Ilion, however, ran on. She wasi challenged by Jewish Lad, Diamond Gutter and Free Gold, end Conversion, who had been near the rear, dashed up on the outer. Conversion’s run was spent quickly. Ilion was fully extended to win by a length from Jewish Lad, who beat Diamond Cutter by a length and a half. Free Gold was fourth. The winner paid double figures. Win for Trebor. Trebor, favourite for the Taratahi Hack Handicap, won nicely in the hands of L. J. Ellis; who scored his second win of the day. Trebor began well and was settled down in fourth place for half a mile. Ellis moved him up to second place running fdr the home, turn, and in the filial furlong he easily accounted for the pacemaker, Rowana, who just held off a late run by Southern Blood. Quake and Sunbeam, who were up behind the leader in the early running, faded out a furlong from home. / Details Of The Racing MAIDEN PLATE, of £80; second £l6, third £B. AT WANGANUI

Final Trentham Gallops

Dominion Special Service.

Wanganui, March 12. .The weather wag perfect this morning for the final gallops of Wanganui horses before their departure for Trentham. The course proper with the flags out some 15 feet was open for fast work, but the going was very hard, as a result of the long,, dry spell. Icing (F. Latham) and .Scarf Dance (W. Rayner) ■ trotted once round and then weut six furlongs together. Scarf Dance had a slight advantage over the first half-mile, which was cut out in 50, but once in the straight Icing drew away to finish eeveral lengths ahead in 1.15}. The Thompson Handicap candidate was running on well at the end, and should be capable of cutting out a very fast mile at Trentham. Much will depend, however, upon how she begins, as she is generally slow to gather up top speed.

Scarf Dance is not engaged at.Trentham, but is to run at Awapuni. She was somewhat unlucky at Bulls, but may make amends at Awapuni, as she is improving steadily. Rehearsal (W. Rayner) and Minga (F. Latham) trotted a circuit, and then sprinted half a mile, running the first quarter in 25 and the full distance in 50i, Minga finishing a couple of lengths to the good. She is probably better now than when she previously raced at Trent- x ham, and she should be very hard to beat in the Pacific Handicap next Thursday. Rehearsal was not ridden put, as he. is hardly forward enough to keep pace with Minga over the distance yet. However, a couple of solid gallops will make a big difference, and he should be considerably improved by next Saturday. Gaily is to take on the Thompson Handicap in preference to the hack event on Thursday, and she has more than an outside chance. She gathers up speed very quickly, and there is no doubt she will run out a fast mile. Gaily has been pleasing W. H. Dwyer by the way she has been getting through her work, and she promises to strip a very fit filly. Mrs. S. L. Parsons has received word of the death in Australia of Thespian, a great galloper in his day, and the sire of Jonathan. Mrs. Parsons intends going to Trentham to see Jonathan race there. This gelding is very fit, and. he may pick up some money at the meeting. DONCASTER HANDICAP New Zealand Horses And Top Weights By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright. Sydney, March 11.
