AWAPUNI TRIALS

Briliant Final Gallops For Trentham Dominion Special Service. Palmerston North, March 12. Trentham candidates occupied most of the stage at Awapuni this morning ni their final trials and, under conditions conducive to fast times, some brilliant gallops were recorded both on the plough and oil the outside of the course proper. Sprinting honours went to Laughing Lass, but The Crooner was equally impreewive in his gallop with Surmount, and Lady Ina gained further admirers for the Railway Handicap. The Thompson hopes attracted considerable attention, with Oratory probably more impressive than the stable-mates Catalogue and Old Surrey- , . . c,., G. W. News team comprising Silver River, Copy Cat, Variance and Raratonga all did steady pacework, but they look well attuned for racing next week and will be sharpened up by short sprints at Trentham. for which centre they .will leave on Monday morning.. J. Chaplin is mentioned as the likely rider for Silver River in the Thompson Handicap at two or three pounds overweight. Laughing Lass (J. Pratt) began brilliantly from the six furlongs and cut out her first three in 36 3-5, finishing on well to run the journey in 1.16 3-5. Her recent track form has been particularly good, but her chances would appear to be better on a turning course. Ambition (Howe), after taking 14 2-a for the first furlong, ran home from the half-mile in 54 and was going well within himself. Clarion Call (Lilley) worked over a couple of rounds and came, home the final half-mile under a good hold in 56. Hunting Queen (Tattersall), on the bit all the way, covered her seven furlongs comfortably in 1.35 2-5, the first five in 1.8 3-5. Aurora's Love, Silent Bill and Rolling Home did strong pacework.

Thompson Handicap Horses.

Oratory (Tattersall), who is not a particularly brilliant track worker, indicated her forward condition by running her seven furlongs alone in 1.32. After taking 13 2-5 for the first, furlong she got to the end of the first three in 37 1-5 and the half-mile in 49 4-5, while she was galloping strongly over the last furlong. No announcement has yet been made about her rider for the big mile race. Catalogue (Johnston) came with one of his characteristic finishing efforts to beat Old Surrey (Little) on the post at the end of their mile run in 1.46. Old Surrey pulled very hard in the ? aj fiy stages, but he covered his first three in 3< 4-5 and the first five in 1.4 3-5, with the six taking 1.18 4-5, and he might have hung on better had he been allowed to make his own pace early. He will be ridden on Thursday by H. J. Callahan, while A. E. Ellis has been engaged for Catalogue. Great Hope (Tattersall) ran home from the half-mile, the last three occupying. 39 1-5.

On the course proper Old Bill (Tattersall) and Selkirk (Dye) ran half a mile in 53 2-5 after the first furlong had taken nearly 15. They finished well. Bluffier (Little) showed a return to her best form by beating Conveyor (Johnston) over seven furlongs in 1.32 1-5, a brilliant effort for hacks. The early pace left Conveyor without his usual good finishing run, as, after taking 13 3-5 for the first furlong, they cut out the- first, half'mile in 51. Bluffier seems to have improved a stone with her race at Bulls. Dunmanway (Dye) ran a smart five furlongs alone on the course proper in 1.5, the last three in 39. He would be better suited at Trentham with the sting out of the going, but he is very well just now. Noisy Night (R. Thomson) finished just ahead of Baldric (H. Thomson) over half a mile in 53, and the former appears to have freshened up nicely. The Crooner Boats Surmount. Surmount (Tattersall) jumped off slightly ahead of The Crooner (Johnston) from the six furlongs and set a solid pace down to the three in 37. From that stage The Crooner gradually assumed the upper hand, and in the. last furlong he drew right out from the youngster to win by a good three lengths in 1.18 1-5. The Crooner, who could have done better had he been pushed, carried on for nearly a furlong and a half further. In the St. Leger and Challenge Stakes The Crooner will be ridden by C. G. Goulsbro, who will also have the mounts on Bluffier, Sudan and Brazil (second day). Surmount has done no fast work since Wanganui, and he may be all the better for his gallop. The jumpers Forest Glow (Williamson) and Cletrac (Little) went particularly well to coyer their six furlongs in 1.20 2-5, the first three in 39. Forest Glow has come on fast in the past week, and appears to have more pace than formerly. Wildflower (Chaplin) completed her workout by running home from the five furlongs, her last half-mile occupying 52, the final two in 25. She was going weli at the finish.

Warehi (Tattersall) finished too well for Taumau (Little), and beat him home over seven furlongs in 1.34 3-5, the first two in 26 4-5, and the first five in 1.7. He has built up a lot recently and looks improved. Bing Boy (Brown) and Skyful (Chaplin) ran a steady five, coming home the last three furlongs in 40. Merry Thought (Johnston) and La Premiere (Little) had to be ridden out to encompass their seven furlongs in 1.32 2-5, the first five in 1.8. It was not an impressive effort.

On the course proper Sudan (Johnston) drew right away from Brazil in the concluding stage's of their five furlongs run in 1.4 4-5, the first three in 39. Sudan favours the hard going, and is likely to have conditions to her liking at Trentham on Thursday. Ecstatic (J. Pratt) ran home from the half-mile in 53, Florence Mills (Chaplin), who was under a good hold all the way; covered her half-mile in 53 2-5.

Lady Ina (Howe) began smartly from the five furlongs to run her first two in 24 3-5, and she was not unduly bustled over the concluding stages, the full journey occupying 1.4 2-5. This consistent mare looks very well and has never been galloping better. P. Atkins has been engaged to ride Conveyor on Thursday. G. R. Tattersall will be on Conversion and will ride Surmount in the Challenge Stakes.
