COLLEGE ROLLS

Wellington Principals’ Reports

An indication of the roll strengths at the beginning of the first term this year is given by the principals of the four Wellington colleges in their reports to the board of governors. Mr. W. A. Armour, headmaster of the Wellington Boys’ College, stated that the number of pupils on the roll was 682, compared with 704 at the beginning of last year. The number of boarders enrolled was 75, an increase of 10 over last year. Owing to the decline in the roll number, the school was unable to retain the services of a temporary master after the end of this month, and unless the roll number reached 690 before March 1, it would be necessary, in accordance with the regulations, to notify another master that his services could not be retained after the end of the first term. It would be very unfortunate if this step had to be taken. Miss N. Isaac, of the Wellington East Girls’ College, reported a roll number of 382, compared with 360 at the beginning of last year. The school therefore was well into grade XI (360 to 389 pupils.), which was not expected at the end of last year. The attendance on opening day of the Wellington Girls’ College, stated Miss V. M. Greig, was 422, of which number 155 were new entrants. The roll number on February 18 was 443. Until March 1 she would not definitely know the grade of the school, but at present the school was in grade XIII. On March 15 last year the roll number was 463 (grade XIV), arid the previous year the grade was XV. A comparison showed a falling tendency. It was possible that by March the school might just make grade XIV, but. if it did not there would be a very serious problem of organisation. In his report bh Rorigbtai College Mr. F. Martyn Renner, advised that he was not yet in a position to give the board an exact statement of the roll, but on present indications it would appear .that in' the. upper school last year’s position would be, maintained with no appreciable change, iri numbers. The lower school numbers would be slightly below those of last year, and with a little adjustment it would appear that the number on the staff would remain unaltered for the year. The total, number of pupils would be in the neighbourhood of 540, the second highest total since the school was established and a number in excess by 40 of . what the school should be asked to accommodate- -
