Increased Shipping Activities Au increase in the shipping arrivals as well as the tonnage handled compared with December, 1936, was announced by the chairman of the Wellington Harbour Board, Mr. D. J. Mc-_ Gowan, at last night’s meeting in reporting on the trade and shipping statistics for the port for December, 1937., The net tonnage of trading vessels arriving wag 388,931 tons, an increase of 19,642 tons. The cargo handled was 164,100 tons, as compared with 160,913 tons, an. increase of 3187 tons. The principal increases were in imports of general cargo from British and foreign ports, 11,760 tons; coastal and Australian ports 4515 tons, and general cargo exports 4390 tons. Decreases are shown in imports of oils in bulk 11,940 tons, and wool and hemp shipments 3101 bales.
