November Fines

In his summary of calls to tires attended by lire brigade stations at M eilington in November, Superintendent C A Woollev reported at yesterday’s meeting of the Wellington Fire Board that the total was 128, excluding 3false alarms, of which eight were malicious. Of the actual fires 14 were property, 7 chimney, and 10 1 gorse, grass and rubbish fires. For the eight months of the year to date the grand total was 768 calls, compared wuh ;>4O for the same period last year.

Constable Street Fire Station. . A tender of £759/10/- by the !• letch! er Construction Co., Ltd., for alterations to the Constable Street fire station. was accepted yesterday at a meeting of the Wellington Fire Board.

Citv Council Staff Holidays. The holidays of the Wellington City Council staff at the year-end will extend from Christmas Eve (Friday next) until January 3. The offices will reopen on January 4.

Bus Service Bought. . The Wcllington-Porirua-litaln BayKarehana Bay omnibus service has been bought from Mr. J. A. Hunter by the Government, which will operate it from to-morrow. Changes in timetables are to be made, one provision being connection at Porirua with the main suburban trains for Wellington.

Air Mails Delayed. Advice has been received from Sydney that air mail consignments for London which left Auckland on November 16 and November 20 were carried by the Empire flying-boat Cygnus, which crashed into the harbour .at Brindisi on December 5. . No details have been received of their arrival at London.

City Council Candidates. The ballot for candidates to represent Labour at the Wellington City Council elections in May resulted as follows Messrs. K. Baxter, A. Black, T. Brindle, W. M. Broadley, P. M. Butler, C. H. Chapman, J. H. Collins, C. .1. Hay, R. McKeen, A. Parlane, J. Read, Mrs. M. Semple, Messrs. H. E. Swindell, J. Tucker, and M. Walsh. The selected candidates for the mayoralty, hospital board, and harbour board were published yesterday.

Fire Brigade Thanked. At a meeting yesterday of the Wellington Fire Board a letter of appreciation was received from the Vickery Electrical Company thanking the brigade for its work in extinguishing the fire which broke out in its premises on Thursday night. The brigade was also thanked for the care taken in-prevent-ing damage to goods on the floors below that on which the Are occurred. The letter enclosed a cheque for £2/2/-.

Mayor’s Appreciation. Appreciation of the action of the students of the Wellington Technical College in raising £5O toward the funds of the Wellington S.P.C.A. was expressed at the breaking-up ceremony of the college last night by the mayor of Wellington, Mr. T. C. A. Hislop, president of the association. One of the finest things youngsters could show, he said, was appreciation of the feelings of a_nimals who could not speak for themselves.

Many Awards Issued. Since the establishment of the Second Arbitration Court three weeks ago, the First Arbitration Court has been particularly busy attempting to complete many matters previously brought before it. It has issued 18 awards, in addition to 11 judgments. There are still seven awards to be released before the Christmas vacation. -The Second Arbitration Court has dealt with 17 applications for awards. It has granted seven, and hopes to complete the remainder at an early date.

National Party Branch Formed. Good progress is being made in the formation of branches of the National Party in the Bay of Islands electorate. A branch has been formed at Kaikohe and further branches are to be formed at Okaihau and Ohaeawai as soon as possible. It is expected that by the middle of next week between 10 and 12 branches will have been formed. More than 100 supporters attended the Kaikohe meeting. Mr. G. F. Guy presided. The meeting was addressed by Mr. T. G. Wilkes, of Wellington, who explained the objects of the party and described the organisation in detail.
