WORK HELD UP
High School Assembly Hall Because of the inability of the contractors to secure sufficient long timber, work on the construction of the assembly hall at the Hutt Valley High School has been temporarily held up to some extent. Nevertheless, excellent progress has been made, largely as a result of the sequence of line days. Since the job was put m hand nearly a month ago has not been a day on which work has not been possible. The .hold-up in timber supplies, it was explained to “The Dominion” yesterday, had been brought about by the shortage of space on the boats lor timber other than that for the Government’s housing scheme. So far only one large upright has come to hand, and still another 15 of the type are required. These are Sin. by Sin., with 70 super feet over all. Until they arrive the work on the body of the hall cannot proceed. Meantime it/has been necessary to shift most of the carpenters to another job. It is expected they will be able to return to the assembly hall work to-day. It has been impossible to secure the required length in rimu. Instead Oregon timber is to be used, and a shipment of this is due to-day.
