SURPRISE IN WAIMATE CUP

Royal Gallant’s Success JOYOUS HAS DECISIVE WIN IN SPRINT Dominion Special Service. Waimate. April 17. The Waimate Racing Club’s meeting wag held in sunny weather before a large attendance. The track was in good order. T" > totalisator handled £11,183/10/-, as against £7117/10/- last year. Initial Success. Recollection was made a firm favourite for the Studholme Highweight Handicap, but was always well back until the final stages were entered upon, when he put in a marked finishing run to gain third place. A good start was effected, but the bunched field going out of the straight soon spread out. owing to several getting knocked back, and Heloise went: out to act as pacemaker from Poniard, while Dropped Catch and Final Bell moved up to th leaders going along the back, lleloise weakened before reaching the straight, and Final Bell led into the home run from Dropped Catch, Heloise, -and Song Boy. Dropped Catch finished on the best to win comfortably from Song Boy, while Recollection was only a neck in _ front of Superex, with Heloise and Final Bell next, the last to finish being Ilaeretonu and Gold Knight. Peacock Maltes Good. The Trial Plate provided an interesting race and a close finish. When the field settled down, Peacock showed out from Arrow Glen, Almira, and Prince Flaneur. Peacock was still in charge turning for home from Arrow Glen and Almira with Te Ahuarangi nnd Prince Flaneur next and Salient Knight becoming prominent. Peacock held off Almira and Te Ahuarangi. but had a close call at the instance of Salient Knight, who put in some remarkable work only to suffer defeat by half a head. Te Ahuarangi was a good third, with Lustral, Comus, and Grand Flaneur in close attendance. Surprise in Cup. Royal Gallant, the rank outsider of the Waimate Cup, executed a very attractive performance to win in a spectacular finish. After a delayed start owing to the behaviour of several of the contestants, Knocktin, who was slow away, forged through on the rails and had charge at the end of a furlong from Araboa, Silver Sight, Royal Gallant and Monipere. Knocktin increased her lead entering the back stretch, and maintained it to the home turn, where Royal Gallant, Travenna and Monipere closed on her. Royal Gallant had Knodkfin’s measure inside the distance, and Travenna and Monipere threw out challenges. Royal Gallant, however, hung on to beat the faster-finishing Monipere by a neck, with Travenna half a length away, and two lengths in front of Knockfin. Silver Sight, Epris and Mount Vai were next. Royal Gallant created a big surprise, as, in spite of bis recent wins in Central Otago, he was not considered dangerous on the firm track which prevailed. Monipere appeared to be hampered a few chains from the post, and no doubt this cost him valuable ground. Travenna was well back early, but was'in a handy place at the half-mile, and looked likely when he challenged in the straight, but weakened in tlie last few strides. I<uockfiu was responsible fur a fast-run race and stayed on in a very encouraging manner. Araboa, third choice, ran a poor race. Glenastle’s Success. Jovial and Flotilla headed the list of investments on the Morven Trot, but the latter was soon out of the contest by breaking up at the start, while Jovial failed to finish on under pressure, after being likely a furlong from home. Ctusheen. Great Dan and Glenastle were the earlv leaders, and they carried on through the back stretch from a strung-out field. Glenastle had charge at the homo turn and led into the straight from Jovial, Wagon Wheels and Great Don. The lastnamed made a determined challenge, but Glenastle was always the winner.. Donor came from a rear position to gain third place from Jovial and Dusky Sound, together. Fa.vourito Succeeds. Rebel Mate was made a pronounced favourite for the Waitangi Hack Handicap and recorded a decisive win. Red Dragon, Nolana and Gipsy Fair were slow to jnove off, but the last-named made a fast run to go into the lead from Rebel Mate. Double Gift. Mazzini and Primak. Gipsy Fair was still in charge entering the straight, but Rebel Mate soon wore her down and placed the issue beyond doubt a good wav from the post. Mazzini finished solidly into second place, while Double Gift was a good third from Ginsv Fair and Primak. Rebel Mate outclassed his opponents ouee he took charge and io a muchimproved galloper since lie opened his winning account ill. Wingatni a few months hack. Mazzini’s first appearance in the Smith Island suggested his future prospects. Primak was going well until lie’met trouble al. the home turn. Golden Vision vns never likely. The Open Sprint. Joyous justified the confident support .accorded her by winning the President's Handicap in an impressive manner. She was one of flic early leaders, but lost her place rounding the homo turn. She was, however, handy to Copyist and Silver Sail entering the straight, and inside the distance had them both beaten. Rebel Chief, who was always prominent, essjjiycd a bold attempt to get up, but Joyous had no difficulty in holding him off. Viking was a fair third, with Final Bell, Copyist and Silver Sail next. Joyous ran up to her recent race and track form and gives indication of carrying on much further in open company. Rebel Chief, who conceded the winner two stone, put up a creditable performance, and Viking showed a slight improvement. Invoice was never prominent. The Second Trot. Don Aeron was the early leader in the Hook Trot, but. soon gave way to Wee Truman, who led along the back Great Don and Crusheen. Great Don was in front rounding the far turn, but was then joined by Jovial, the pair entering the straight clear of Crusheen and Donor. Jovial had Great Ron beaten 50 yards from the post, but Donor then put in a solid claim and wore down Jovial to beat her narrowly on the post. Crusheen was a. close third, with Great Don well in front of the remainder. Improved Showing. The concluding event, the Stewards’ Hack Handicap, provided another surprise, and a solid two-figure dividend. The winner, Heloise, was in fourth place entering the straight from Owls Gieam, Thermidor and Slade Money, but finishing with a burst of speed, swooped down on the leaders and got up to win in the last stride from Thermidor. Owls Gleam weakened into a fair third placing, half a length in front of Forum, who was on terms with Dictate and Silver Slipper. Heloise evidently benefited by her earlier, effort in which she. stopped badly but in this race was finishing on. Thermidor hung on well and maj soon reward her new owner with a win. Stolen March was prominent to the home turn only, while the staunch favourite Dictate, who drew wide out, was always well buck. Details of the Racing By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright. MANAWATU TROTS 3. d 3. Glorietta Succeeds In Cup Race s >• WIN FOR DORIS DERBY s (By Overcheck.) Palmerston North, April 17. The Manawatu Trotting Club experienced fine weather for its meeting on Saturday, but a very cold southerly wind made matters a little unpleasant for those present. The attendance was particu--1 larlv good, and as a result of the large • fields'and spirited betting the totalisator figures were very satisfactory, reaching the sum of £14,894/10/-. This should resuit iii the club making a substantial • profit. The track was in good order, . though not fast. Glorietta won the cup nicelv from the favourite Reno, while Doris Derby proved too good for the sprinters in the concluding event. Grattan Girl Nicely. Grattan Girl, nicely handled by F. J. Smith, won the Ladies’ Bracelet Handicap comfortably from Crystal Chimes and Adverse. The early leader was Crystal Chimes from Adverse, Grattan Girl and Gauge, but racing through the straight Crystal Chimes was showing out from Adverse, Grattan Girl, Gauge, Lock Leven and Snowy Bingen, who was breaking. King Gussie and Ropata improved their positions down the back, the latter running into fourth place. There was little between Crystal Chimes, Adverse and Grattan Girl as they turned for home, but once called upon for her best Grattan Girl came awav to score comfortably by four lengths. Adverse tangled halfway down the straight, but nevertheless was able to secure third place. Ropata was fourth, followed by Loch Leven and King Gussie. Worthy Member Surprises. Worthy Member created a surprise by winning the Awapuni Handicap. The favourite. Biworthy, failed to race evenly and was never in the picture. Querida broke at the start and twice during the race, but for which she would probably have won. Arapai trotted a great race into third place. Native Leaf began smartly and through the straight was showing the way to Worthy Member, Native Guy, Audrey’s Last, Black Native and Native’ Bird. Querida and Arapai substantially improved their positions over the next four furlongs, and the order with four furlongs to go was Native Leaf, Worthy Member, Querida, Arapai, Native Bird and Biworthy, with .the others well out of the race. Querida was close upon the heels of Native Leaf and Worthy Member as they turned for home, but again broke about a furlong from the post. Native Leaf also made a mistake about fifty yards from home, allowing Worthy Member to secure first prize by three lengths. Native Leaf got down again in time to hold off Arapaj by two lengths, with Querida fourth. Native Bird and Wrackless were next to finish. Trevor de Oro Comfortably. Trevor de Cro justified his position of favourite by coming away nicely from Casino in the final furlong of the Pohangina Handicap to win comfortably by about three lengths. Baron Derby failed to go away, while First Aid also tangled and lost a lot of ground. Mr. Guy was the early leader from Casino, Dusky Chum, Waving Corn, Effie Parrish, Musketeer, and Trevor de Oro. Passing the post the first time Roadster moved up on the outside but was covering a lot of extra ground. As they turned down the back Mr. Guy increased his lead from Casino, Dusky Chum, and Waving Corn, but with four furlongs to go Trevor de Oro, Roadster, and Musketeer increased -the pace and when they turned for home Trevor de Oro was lying third to Mr. Guy and Casino. Donald then called on Casino, but in a short, sharp struggle Trevor de Oro got the upper hand, and went on to win comfortably, with Dusky Chum four .lengths away third, and Mr. Guy fourth. "First aid paced a fair race once she settled down, and was prominent behind the placed horses at the finish.

Glorietta’s Cup. Glorietta was allowed to pay a nice dividend in the Cup, which she won rather comfortably. Reno did not make a good beginning and lost at least 24 yards. Impostor was the early leader, but at the end of a furlong Franz Derby had charge from Impostor, Levity, Doris Derby, Native Cole, Reno, Glorietta, Teri Kingi, and Full Hand. At the end of a mile Levity wa acting as pacemaker Rrom Fritz Derby, Impostor, Doris Derby and Native Cole. The field bunched in the next few furlongs. Racing down the back Reno moved up smartly and was just behind Levity and Franz Derby two furlongs from home. Once into the straight Reno ran to the front and appeared to be the winner, but Glorietta came with a rush from the top of the straight and took the lead about sixty yards from the winning post, and won decisively by three lengths from Reno, who was tiring. Doris Derby outstayed the others to secure third money. A Good Two-year-old. The Longbum Handicap was won by Sandusky, a smart two-year-old by Jewel Pointer from Bonnie Bingen. Crystal Chimes dwelt a bit at the start, Adverse taking charge from King Gussie. At the end of a furlong Crystal Chimes ran to the front and led from King Gussie, Adverse, Gauge, and Worthy Audubon. Sandusky and Worthy Audubon moved up smartly down the back and were in striking distance as they turned for home. Crystal Chimes could not hold his position, Worthy Audubon taking charge, hotly pursued by King Gussie and Sandusky. The latter, under a hard drive, responded in the gamest possible manner, and had the race in safe keeping over the last hundred yards. Worthy Audubon weakened in the last furlong to allow King Gussie to take second honours. The . winner comes from F. J. Smith’s stable, in whose capable hands he should develop into a high-class performer. Casino Atones. After being one of the leaders throughout, Casino carried too many guns for the others in the Stewards* Handicap. Travisque tangled at the start and spoilt his chance. When the field had settled down Mr. Guy had charge from Casino, Tennessee's Child. Effie Parrish, Waving Corn, and Travisque. As they ran out of the straight Silver Black moved up smartly on the outside and was in fourth berth as they raced down the back, when the leading division comprised Mr. Guy, Ellie Parrish, Casino, Silver Black, and Tennessee’s Child. Ellie Parrish broke, and Silver Black further improved her position. Mr. Guy turned for home closely followed by Casino, Silver Black, Tennessee’s Child, and Travisque. Casino always had the measure of the others over the last two furlongs, and won by two lengths. Four others went over the line in a bunch, the judge placing Tennessee's Child second, Mr. Guy third, and Decoy Bird fourth. A Great Effort. Tan John put up a great performance by winning tile McDonald Handicap from 108 yards behind scratch. When the Held was dispatched Native Bird led out from Waingake, Hard Lad and Unworthy. Racing down the back Native Leaf ran to the front from Native Bird, Waingake (who broke) Unworthy, Dollar Maid, Bronte, Tan John, and Arapai. Through the straight the first time Native Leaf still had charge from Waingake, Native Bird, Bronte, Tan John, Arapai, Unworthy (galloping), Dollar Maid, Aerial Boy, and Hard Lad. Native Leaf went in the air live furlongs from home, but did not lose her position. Approaching the straight entrance Bronte, Tan John and Arapai closed on the leaders. A hot. battle between these was waged over the last couple of furlongs,

but Tan John had most in reserve, and won nicely in the end by live lengths, both Bronte and Arapai, who were second and third respectively, tiring over the last hundred yards. Waingake was fourth. Doris Derby Takes Sprint. As was generally anticipated would be the case, the President’s Handicap provided a stirring contest. Doris Derby I was first out from Silver Black, Electric Bell, Impostor, Decoy Bird, Juggler, Activity, and Native Cole. Racing down the back Silver Black was in charge, but had not the necessary advantage to take the inner running from Doris Derby, who was followed by Electric Bell, and Impostor. As they approached the straight, the field closed round Electric Bell, who was thus securely pocketed at the most critical stage of the race. Pacing soundly, Doris Derby drew out in the run home to win a great race by two lengths from Silver Black, who was a head in front of Impostor. Full Hand finished very strongly, and was right up with the placed horses. Details of the Racing LADIES’ BRACELET HANDICAP (harness), of £100; second horse £2O, third £10; 3.43 class.
