NELSON EVENTS

Cup to Davistock SPRINT TO ARENA Win for The Sandwich Man Dominion Special Service. Nelson, April 17. The Nelson Jockey Club’s annual meeting was opened to-day in beautiful ■weather. There was a large attendance, and though some of the fields were small the racing was good and there was a handy totalisator increase. The totalisator handled £6024, compared with £5078 last year. . The cup was won by Davistock, and the Stewards’ Handicap by Arena, while the Licensed Victuallers’ Hack Handicap fell to The Sandwich Man, ridden by R. Coveney, who has long been absent from race riding. One to Trenthain. Ohanga and Southern Blood were well backed to win the Novice Stakes, and they fought out the finish. Ohanga was prominent all the way, but Southern Blood came from the back and, finishing well, won by half a neck. Arrowin was a moderate third and Haggis fourth. Bit o’ Blue was hopelessly left, and Gay Sceptre got away badly. Comfortable Win. Roy Bun won the Hope Hack Handicap comfortably. His chief opponent was Impersonator, whom he beat by a length. Derive and Grampian, the only other starters, ran very badly. Roy Bun and Impersonator are both in fairly good form, especially Roy Bun.

Davistock’s Success. Davistock comfortably defeated Pludie and Dark Rose in the Nelson Cup, drawino’ away in the run home to be two lengths clear at the finish. Pladio was second half a length ahead of Dark Rose. Davistock looked well. Pladie finished disappointingly. Held on to Win. The Sandwich Man went to the front fairly early in the Licensed Victuallers’ Handicap and held on to win. by half a length from Gasmask. Revival and Chaste dashed up at the death aid joined in a good finish. Laggard was never prominent, and Lady Siegfried’s performance was below expectations. By Half a Head. Only four contested the Stewards’ Handicap. Arena looked like winning easily, but Impersonator ran her to half a head. Derive was a fair third and the other starter was Marcus Cicero. Top Rank Impresses. Top Rank made short work of Prince Mulla and Deliurn, his two opponents in the Electric Hack Handicap. He came away in the straight to win very easily from Prince Mulla, who just beat Delium. Top Rank’s form was impressive. Solid Finish. Finishing resolutely, Chaste decisively accounted for the opposition in the Waimea Handicap, after having failed earlier in the day. Free Rose was too good for Dark Rose in the race for second money. Bon Tray was fourth and Supreme Court last. Bon Tray did not show anything like his usual dash. Details of the Racing By Telegraph—Press Association. NOVICE HANDICAP, of £75. Five furlongs.
