NEGOTIATIONS FAIL
Sydney Foundry Dispute Sydney. April 16. The negotiations for a settlement of the foundries dispute collapsed. The union leaders announced that they are now preparing for a prolonged struggle. The employers of 40 Sydney foundries on March 17 served notice to over 2000 employees that their services would not be required until further notice. The lock-out was the result of a dispute with the employees, who claimed increased wages and elimination of overtime. The Metal Trades Employers’ Association insisted on the observance of the award, and issued an ultimatum to the employees of the Clyde Engineering Company and Gordon Marr and Sons, where strikes had occurred, that if the men did not return to work by March 16 all the metropolitan foundries would close forthwith. By the following day about 50 foundries were idle. In addition to their previous claims the men asked for a 40liour week. Early this week it was reported that the employees ui more than 10 foundries, had resumed morning. Those who resumed had abandoned the stand taken in a recent nil.nsitum that the strike would be continued until a rise of 12/- a week in the basic wage was granted.
