ECHO OF SPANISH WAR
Specially-franked Stamp
Dominion Special Service. Hustings, March 26.
An echo of the Spanish civil war has found its way into Hastings with a letter addressed to Mr. 11. Dedenne, who has the seismological station in Hastings. The letter was addressed to “The Seismological Station, 304 S. Nelson Street, Hasting, Neuva Zelanda Nort,” and comes from the seismological observatory in Granada. The envelope bears three stamps, two of them the ordinary five cent stamps bearing the portrait of the president and the word “correros.” Both are franked in the usual manner, but it is the third stamp which carries with it the tang of powder. It is unfranked, with the national colours of Spain in three stripes, red, yellow and red. and bears the inscription, “Asociacion De Garidad, Sello di Franqueo, viva Espana.” The two flve-cent stamps are apparently the usual Republic issue, while the third, issued with the seal of Franco and an enthusiastic “Long live Spain,” is from appearances a special revenue stamp issued to procure funds for the prosecution of the war.
