AMATEUR ATHLETICS

Johnsonville R.S.A. Meeting WELLINGTON CLUB WINS POINTS CUP A strong north wind hampered runners and cyclists at Hataitai Park on Saturday, when the postponed sports meeting arranged by the Johnsonville Returned Soldiers’ Association was conducteel under the Wellington Athlete Centre’s control. Large fields competed, but the attendance was only fair. The National Tobacco Company's cup for the club points competition was won by the Wellington club, and the association’s individual points cup by J. Hamilton, of the same club. Trophies were presented at the close of the meeting by Mr. L. G. Lowry, M.l*. for Otaki. He spoke of the intensive work for physical ntnesr among European nations, particularly Germany. A clean mind and a healthy body, he said,, stood for good citizenship. There was a great future in New Zealand for youth, and the country stood in need of men and women possessed ot healthy physique. The Caledonian Pipe Band played musical items.

Hamilton, the points cup winner, was first in the 100 yards handicap off b yards first in the 220 yards hurdles, in which he was the back marker, and a member of his club's victorious relay team, V. Reflpath, a former Canterbury champion, won his heat of the 100 yards in 10 seconds, assisted by a following wind, and showed a great burst of speed in the final dash of the relay to give his club first place. Aided by a substantial handicap, I'. Bay, another Wellington club man, stayed in front all the way to win the mile handicap from A. R. Wilson, Wellington provincial champion, who started from scratch. The winner proved his fitness by keeping an even pace against a strong wind, H. W. Thoms, Petone, ran his bese race of the season in the quarter-mile, which he won from 24 yards. The outstanding junior was J. Suther land, a Waitaki High School boy. He won the sprint event in convincing style in 10 l-ssec. Still another Wellington victory was that of Miss D. Hurley in the women's 100 yards. L. Sowerby and W. Keighley, Port Nicholson, were the most successful cyclists. The former was first from scratch in the mile handicap and third in the half-mile, and the latter finished second in both events. G. Arney, of the same club, scored a popular victory in a strenuous three-mile contest. Detailed Results.
