Our Prison Figures
Sir, —Some recent Scandinavian prison figures may make New Zealand open her eves a bit. Norway, last year, with some three million inhabitants, had only 1020 prisoners; New Zealand, with half that population, 1150 at the end of the year, 1212 as daily average. My present figures for Denmark relate only to 1932. Denmark has 3J million inhabitants, and in that year had 1409 prisoners; while with less than half the same population New Zealand had a daily average of 1669 I For Sweden, 1 have so far no figures, and should be greatly obliged if any of your readers can supply them. May I remind them all that our prison population is relatively no loss than three times that of England, and ask why? An inquiry into our penal system seems indicated.— 1 am, etc., B. E. BAUGHAN. Akaroa, November 16.
