Prisoners Sentenced at New Plymouth

New Plymouth, November 12.

Five prisoners were sentenced by bis Honour Mr. Justice Reed in the Supreme Court to-day. John Louis Anderson, found guilty of indecent assault against two young girls, was sentenced to IS months’ hard labour on each charge, the sentences to be concurrent.

Duncan Donald Hammon, aged 58, who had pleaded guilty, was sentenced to two years’ imprisonment with hard labour on each of five charges of indecent assault against girls, the sentences to be concurrent. “I have to make it plain to men of your age that the law is determined to protect young girls,” said his Honour. Reginald George Smith, who had pleaded guilty to two charges of indecent assault on a male and one of breaking and entering, and theft, was sentenced to hard labour on each of the indecency charges and to 12 months’ hard labour on each of the other charges, the sentences to be concurrent. He was also declared a habitual criminal.

A young man, aged 22, whose name was suppressed, was ordered to come up for sentence if called upon within three years and to pay the costs of the prosecution (£l/9/-) ou a charge of incest to which he had pleaded guilly. Ernest Clark, who had pleaded guilty, was sentenced to six months hard labour for cattle stealing.
