POLICE SOCIAL
Successful Evening at St. Francis Hall Attended by many members of all branches of the Police Force and their friends, the social (the last of a series held during the year) which took place last night at St. Francis Hall, was a decided success, and spoke volumes for the members of the committee of the Police Social Olub and Pipe Band who organised it. The hall was decorated with streamers of blue and orange radiating from a central mirror-ball to the sides and corners of the room. On the walls were modernistic panels in similar colours, and enormous artificial chrysanthemums in tall jardinieres added a further touch of colour to the scene. In the supper-room, where a sit-down supper was served, the tables were decorated with large baskets of Iceland poppies and other spring flowers and birch. Orange serviettes looked most attractive and gave a festive air to the room. For those who did not dance, there was a card tournament in the upstairs lounge, where every table was occupied. Music for dancing was played by the police orchestra, composed of 12 members, six playing at a time. One section was conducted by Detective Smeaton and the other by Constable Brownie. Extras were played by Mrs. R, Fletcher. A feature of the evening were the items played by the pipe band, resplendent in uniform and led by Pipe-Major McPhee. These were loudly applauded and certainly added greatly to the enjoyment of this successful occasion. The committee responsible for all the arrangements comprised: Inspector G. Edwards (chairman), Sergeant D. Beard (treasurer), Constable W. GBennett (secretary), Senior-Sergeant Power (M.C.), Senior-Sergeant D. O’Neill, Constables A. Johnston, Williams, Fell and Callaghan, Detectives McPhee and Hogan. The social was attended by Superintendent Fraser, the new superintendent for the district, and Mrs. Fraser.
