District Activities The following ar e reports of meetings of Women’s Institutes additional to those published last Saturday : — Raetihi. The monthly meeting of the Raetihi Women’s Institute was held in the Druids’ Hall, Mrs. F. Mitchinson, vicepresident, being in (he chair. Miss F. .Scarrow was appointed secretary for the meeting in the absence of Mrs. Lynch. “Yes and No” and “Sign” competitions were much enjoyed. Mrs. D. F. Scarrow and Mrs. Moore tied for first place in the latter, and Miss Fay Hopkinson was first in the former. A demonstration of glove making was given by Mrs. A. M. Laing, for which a vote of thanks was passed by acclamation. A recitation by Mrs. W. Hussey and a song by Mrs. F. Soar were much I enjoyed. Afternoon tea was served by the following hostesses: Mesdames C. 1 Davis, H. Frederick, A. Head and A. Urwin. The prize for the most useful string ' bag holder was awarded to Mrs. T. Ward, and for coconut ice to Mrs. W. JourI neaux. Rangiwahia. ' Mrs. Boshier presided over a very good attendance of the Rangiwahia Women’s Institute at the monthly meeting held last week. Community singing was en- , joyed. Mejidames Tompkins and Fankhauser ( were appointed delegates to the group , meeting at Apiti on September 3. An : item from this institute is being ar- ■ ranged. t Mrs. Beilski had painted a picture , which she offered to the institute for a , competition to raise funds. Mrs. Beilski 1 received a vote of thanks for her gener- 1 ous offer. • < Mrs. Noshier gave a full report of the < Dominion conference, which she had at- I tended as a delegate. A vote of thanks 1 was carried with acclamation as she con- 1 eluded her report. : 1 Maxwell. 1 1 There was a large attendance at the August meeting of the Maxwell Women’s Institute, held on August 4, there being a number of visitors from Kai Iwi and , Wanganui, including Mrs. Brine, federa- , tion president. Invitations were received to Kai Iwi, 1 Okoia and Mosston meetings. It was ' agreed that each member should give 3d. ‘ toward the gift portrait of Her Majesty Queen Mary to the National Art Gallery, j Advice was received that the half-yearly ( council meeting would be held at Fordell , in October. Mrs. Carpenter, of Ara- J moho Women’s Institute, gave a demon- j stration on making a presentation box of ( flowers, and Mr. Cox a talk on spring ■ gardening. , The flower competition, a tumbler of flowers, brought forth a large number of entries, the result being: Mrs. E. A very comprehensiv’e report of the an- ' nual Dominion conference of the women’s institutes, wag given by Mrs. Spackman, < who presided at the August meeting of the Silverstream Women’s Institute. After speaking of the many interesting sidelights which always accompany such an occasion, Mrs. Spackman expressed her gratitude for the opportunity which had been given her to attend the conference, and she hoped she would be ajjfe to pass on the experience and knowledge that she had gained. A vote of thanks was accorded her. Mrs. Horne, of the Dominion executive, spoke briefly on some finance questions which had arisen at the conference. The proceeds from the bring-and-buy stall were donated to the federation funds. During the social hour afternoon tea was served. As it was "members’ afternoon,” the programme was arranged by the members. A short sketch was played by Mesdames Pierard, Holcroft, Jones, Castle, and Miss Murnby, and Mrs. Chap-man-Taylor read an amusing skit from “Punch” on women’s institutes. Kahutara. The president, Mrs. McKenna, presided over a very good attendance of members and visitors at the monthly meeting of the Kahutara Women’s Institute. A welcome was extended to Miss Maddever, Wellington, and four new members. After Miss Maddever had given a talk on the Dominion conference, members adjourned to the Kahutara School, where the president. on behalf of the institute, asked Mr. Russell, headmaster, to accept a tree, which was planted by Miss Maddever. After tea had been served by the hostesses, Mesdames D. Wilson, Graham, M. Wilson and T. Duffy, Miss Maddever demonstrated some of her ‘ handicrafts.’ ' Pliinmerton. j The Pliinmerton institute celebrated j its fourth birthday recently, when friends I and visitors from other institutes gathered together to enjoy a very pleasant afternoon. Mrs. Atkin, president, welcomed the visitors, among whom were Mrs, White-Scott, Miss Cottier, Sister Bennett and Mrs. Wall, also Mrs. Barclay, of the W.D.F.U., as well as many others. Greetings were received from sister institutes in the form of letters, telegrams and flowers. During the afternoon Mrs. MeEwen, Tawa Flat, and Mrs. Pengelly, Wellington, delighted all present with their singing. Both were warmly thanked and received beautiful posies in appreciation. Two little girls, Bettina Kerr and Valerie Barrett, recited, and the drama circle presented a play, “Love Letters,” which was produced by Mrs. Kerr. The parts were played by Mesdames Greive, Laydqn and Gibson. Mrs. Hume and Mrs. Atkins were given many posies and sprays conveying the greetings of other institutes. — Afternoon tea was served by the members and the two-tier cake was cut by Mrs. Hume. Tuai. The Tuai Women’s Institute held'its August meeting recently. The competitions were:—Buttonhole spray: Mrs. Godman, 1; Mrs. Frame, 2. Jam tarts: Mrs. MacDonald. 1 ; Mrs. Sinclair, 2. A competition was won by Mrs. Roy and Miss Hawkins. Wimbledon-Herbertville. Owing to bad weather, there was a poor attendance at the August meeting of the Wimbledon-Herbertville Women’s Institute. Mrs. Herrick presided, and gave an interesting talk on the women’s institute conference at Dunedin, to which she was delegate. Miss Doris Crosse, who is to be married shortly, was presented with a gift from the institute. The competitions were:— Hot-water bag covers, knitted or otherwise, for which Mrs. Pope came first, and Miss Gollan second. Mies Longley gained a special prize in the non-knitted section. Brown scones: Mrs. P. Morgans first, and Miss Longley second. The hostesses for the afternoon were Mesdames Pope and G. Herbert. Stokes Valley. The president welcomed a very large attendance of members and visitors at •

the recent meeting of the Stokes Valley institute. Mrs. Cording gave a comprehensive' report on the Dominion annual conference held at Dunedin. After the business was transacted, the president vacated the chair to Mrs. Hurney, who in eap and gown, presided for the remainder of tdie meeting. The Hutt and Wellington members, dressed as pierrots and pierettes in lovely shades of heliotrope and gold, gave very bright items with their toy band, and wer< also heard in choruses and solos. Clevci elocutionary items were given, as well as a one-act play. Afternoon tea was served by the committee. Opaki. A display of antiques was a feature oi the last meeting of the Opaki Women’s Institute. As usual, the meeting, was held at the residence of the president, Mrs. Wingate, who was in the chair. The antiques, which belonged to members of the institute, ranged from exquisite needlework up to a hundred years old, t<i pieces of old-fashioned jewellery. Everything was much admired, keen interest being taken in. the display. During the afternoon Miss Munro.? gave a most enjoyable and interesting talk on early Masterton. The competition was Scotch shortbread or Scotch oatcake. This was judged by populat vote and resulted as follows: Shortbread Mrs. Wingate 1, Miss U. Rollo 2, Mrs. Miller 3: Scotch oatcake, Mrs. Beetham 1, Miss G. Miller 2. Afternoon tea was served by the hostesses, Mrs. Cooper and Mrs. Harris. Alfredton. There was a very good attendance at the September meeting of the Alfredton Women’s Institute. A demonstration, given by Mrs. Atkinson, on the making of wood pulp flowers was followed with great interest by all present, some- of whom attempted to make flowers themselves after the method had been explained. Mrs. Dickens and Mrs. T. Smith were chosen as delegates to the half-yearly meeting at Pahiatua, at Which Mrs. Watt and Mrs. Patterson will be present. The competition of a hand-made dress for a child under three, and not costing more than 2/6, was won by Miss B. Percy, with Mrs. Dickens second and Mrs. T. Smith third. In the pikelet competition, Miss S. Napier was first, Mrs. Weston second, and Mrs. Dickens third. The hostesses were Mrs. Clarkson, Misses N. Smith, M. Clarkson and S. Napier. Porirua. The recent meeting of the Porirua Women’s Institute was presided over by Mrs. Ryafl. A welcome was extended to a visitor from Auckland. As a mark of sympathy for a member who recently suffered a -bereavement, a minute’s silence was observed. The delegate to the annual general meeting, held in Dunedin last month, read a report of the conference. The art of smocking was demonstrated to interested members. In the competition for the six best pikelets, the highest points were gained by Mrs. Doddington and Mrs. Johnston, equal. Mrs. Wright won the prize in a jumbled words competition. Hastwells. The monthly meeting of the Hastwells Women’s Institute was held recently, Mrs. Dick presiding over a fair attendance. The competition for ginger biscuits was won by Mrs. F. Madson, witii Mrs. A.“V. Madson second, and Miss E. Dick third. The junior class was won by Betty Kenny, with Kathleen Larsen second. Mrs. Nicholson was the judge, The game which was arranged by Mrs K. Ngaturi and Miss Sigvertson, re suited: Mrs. Broadbent, 1; Mrs. Thorby 2; Kathleen Larsen, 3. Miss Bliss gave an interesting demonstration of tapestrj work, and brought with her some finishes articles which were much admired. Afternoon tea was served by Mrs. G. Halberg. Miss Fredrickson, and Miss Olga Halberg. < J Mauriceville. Despite the bad weather, a pleasani afternoon was spent at the home of Mrs A. Forsberg, Mauriceville West, recently when the Mauriceville institute held its monthly meeting. Mrs. H. Freeman pre sided, A -bright log fire glowed in th< sitting-room, which was decorated witl spring bulbs. The balance-sheet of th< dance held recently disclosed a gooc profit. It was decided to support ar appeal on behalf of the Makogai lepers Two delegates are to be sent to the federation meeting to be held in October al Pahiatua.
