LOWER HUTT BOROUGH

Monthly Council Meeting The monthly meeting bf the Lower Hutt Borough Council was held last night, the Mayor, Mr. J. W. Andrews, presiding. The I’ort Nicholson Whippet Racing Club was granted a licence for the whippet racing ground known as the Waiwhetu Track, subject to there being r.o racing on Sunday. Mr. C. -C. Odlin is to be thanked for his generosity in donating £25 for the widening and improving of the corner at Bellvue Road and Ludlam Crescent, where many accidents hace occurred in the past. In his letter to the council, setting out the conditions governing the donation, Mr. Odlin said that if the cost of the improvement did not amount to £25, the council was free to use the unexpended portion on other street improvements in the borough. A councillor said he hoped that other citizens would be as generous as .Mr. Odlin. There was a discussion on the question of granting King George Theatre for a Sunday picture entertainment fl* which it was stated nobody would receive payment, and the funds would go to the Lower Hutt Band’s contest and uniform fund. Some councillors pointed out that the experience of the past was that wages were paid to Individuals. It was ascertained that the picture operator was required to be paid by law. Some councillors, therefore, saw no reason why other individuals should have to give their services free. It was also mentioned that there was an "undesirable element” in evidence at the last Sunday concert. It was decided by 6 votes to 3 not to grant permission. The librarian reported that the subscribers to the public library at the end of August totalled 497. compared with 450 at the end of August, 1935. New books added to the library last August totalled 107, compared with 35 for August, 1935. Cr. W. A. F. Hall said that the return showed a remarkable improvement, particularly in the class of the new books added. The Mayor paid a tribute to the late Mr. G. F. Judd, councillors standing in silence as a mark of respect. A letter of sympathy is to be sent to the relatives of the late Mr. Judd. It was reported that salaries and wages for the council’s staff had been restored to the 1931 level in compliance with the terms of the Finance Act, 1936. Mr. C. D. Richardson was appointed custodian of the Riddiford Baths. There were 14 applications for the position. During August building permits to the value of £17,021 were issued, the 31 buildings concerned including 18 dwellings in wood of a total value of £15,004.
