ADVERSE REPORT

Risk of Fire in Fire Station “I consider the fire station buildings to be unsuitable for the valuable equipment at present housed therein,” reported Mr C. E. H. Yarnell. Upper Hute borough inspector to the council last evening. “The risk of fire is greater to-day tha-i previously, owing to the fact that motors with benzine and oil are stored under tie same roof and therefore I am of opinion that consideration should be given to the erection of a new building of modern design.” Mr. Yarnell said that the southern waH of the main building was in such a condition as to warrant.a renewal of u major portion of the weatherboards. As these were infested ■ with borer it would suggest that the studs were also defective. "There .is also a decided outward bulge in this wall, which indicates a weakness in the structure,", Mr. Yarnell said. The floor of the social room was below street level and the ground of adjacent sections had been filled to n depth of Ift. Gin. above that level, so that the yvhole interior was constantly damp. The eastern wall was defective and necessitated renewal of the weatherboards. The spouting and downpipe were defective, so that the stormwater caused deterioration. As the station. Was erected on the boundary line, tha discharge of stormwater upon the adjacent section had been objected to by the owner. After some discussion, in which the Mayor suggested a new fire station should be erected in Station Street, the question of providing new fire stations at Silverstream and Upper Hutt was referred to the Fire Prevention Committee.
