Generous Gift to Scots College
IN MEMORY OF PAST , PUPIL Through the generosity of Mrs. E. K. Alderson, Hataitai, Wellington, ScotsCollege now possesses probably the most up-to-date and best equipped library in New Zealand. The library, which has been presented by Mrs. Alderson in memory of her late son, Oliver, a pasl pupil of the college, is to be known as the Alderson Memorial Library. It will be officially opened by his Excellency the Governor General, Lord Galway, on Tuesday afternoon next.
Several hundred books have been presented by Mrs. Alderson, and will be housed in a redecorated and comfortably; furnished room. It is a fine collection of books, including works of reference, history, biography, travel, religion, fiction, ami a set of Harvard classics.
The latest and best equipment has been installed, this including'adjustable steel shelving, a writing desk, a reading table, and a well-equipped librarian's desk, the whole being carried out in steel and enamelled in Scot's grey. A striking feature is the heavy rubber flooring which will ensure that silence conducive to study. The flooring is, patterned in the college colours, grey and red, and has the college crest inlaid. The chairs are of solid oak, and in these, too, the college colours have been well expressed. Each chair, including a special revolving one for the librarian, bears the carved inscription of A.M.L.. which represents Alderson Memorial Library, and which will perpetuate for all time the memory of a loyal son of the college, and of the generous donor. Throughout the fittings harmonise with the general colour scheme and enhance the atmosphere of distinction and restfulness the library was designed to radiate.
