EASTBOURNE RATES

Increase in Hospital Item OTHERS AS BEFORE “The rates as struck, with the exception of the hospital rate, will bring in the same amount as last year,” said the Mayor of Eastbourne, Mr. E. AV. Wise, at last evening's meeting of the borough council, when the rates were passed. The new hospital rate would yield a total of £1176, which was £4OO more than that raised last year. The new rates are levied on <o per cent, of unimproved value and are : General rate of 3d. in the £, hospital. 1 5-12 d.; consolidated conversion, 43d.; water and sewerage loan, 27-12 d.; water rate, Jd.; refuse collection fee of lt>/- on each assessment with building. A discount of 4 per cent., will be allowed on all rates paid within 30 days of demand. The town clerk, Mr. C. L. Bishop, furnished a return showing the gross amount which the new rate is estimated to produce, together with the corresponding amounts for last year, as follow: — This year. Last year. £ £

The refuse collection fee and the water rate replace the sanitation fee of 30/levied last year. Mr. Wise said he did not think any local body had been notified by the Hospital Board that there was to be any increase in the hospital rate. The only information they had was from the newspapers, but all the local bodies had made provision for a heavier rate. Or. M. Magill: “It has made it very difficult for the local bodies to make provision for the rate.” The Mayor: “It has.” Mr. Bishop said there was a special hospital account, aud any credit would be curried forward. A corresponding reduction would be made in the rate. “That is not likely to happen,” he added..
