PORTRAIT GALLERY

Building Up National Collection A very fair start has been made with the building-up of a portrait section of the National Art Gallery. Five portraits were on exhibition yesterday on the occasion of the handing over of the portraits of Sir Francis Bell and Sir Truby King. These were his Majesty the King (full length), Lord Bledisloe (full length in court regalia), Sir Francis 8011, Sir Truby King, and Sir James Mills. To be added to these are the tine portraits in oils of Lord Rutherford, Sir Harold Beauchamp, and the late Archbishop Redwood. Such a collection would be enriched by portraits of such men as Edward Gibbon Wakefield (an indifferent one of whom hangs in the City Council Chamber). Sir George Grey, Bishops Marsden and Pompallier, R. J. Seddon, W. F. Massey, and Dr. Cockayne. There is an admirably executed fulllength portrait of Edward Jerningham Wakefield hanging in the City Council Chamber. This is a real gallery portrait, and as the subject had very little to do with municipal iwlitics, it has been suggested that his portrait might be offered to the trustees of the National Gallery.
