Dempster Makes 164 Not Out London, May 19. There were some particularly interesting results in the series of county cricket matches which was completed to-day and heavy scoring on some grounds contrasted with low totals on others. One of the biggest wins of the series was registered at the expense of Sussex by Leicestershire, for whom the former New Zealander, C. S. Dempster, made 164 not out. In a low-scor-ing match Worcestershire beat Yorkshire by 11 runs, Verity secured 13 wickets at a total cost of SS runs. Though they were 43 runs behind on the first innings Derbyshire managed to defeat Surrey by 16 runs, the latter team being dismissed in the second innings for Kent held the lead in the championship by preserving their unbroken run of outright wins. In addition to Dempster batsmen who made centuries were Shipman (Leicestershire), Iddon (Lancashire). Gimblett. (Somerset), Barnett (Glon cestershire), Harris and Hardstaff (Nottinghamshire). Ashdown (Kent). Kilne.r (Warwickshire), and Smart (Glamorgan). There were also some fine howling performances, particularly by Copson (Derbyshire) and Jackson (Worces tershire). Larwood took live Gloucestershire wickets at a total cost of 56 runs. The results are: — Sussex v. Leicestershire, at Hove.— Sussex, 297 (Tate 69. IT. Parks 71) and 208; Leicestershire. 453 for seven declared (Shipman 103, Dempster 164 not out) and 23 for none. Leicestershire won by ten wickets. Derbyshire v. Surrey, at Derby.— Derbyshire, 175 (Alderman 77; Gover five for 63) and 136 (Brown five for 53); Surrey. 2.18 (Barling 95; Copson five for 33) and 77 (Copson seven for 19). Derbyshire won by 16 runs. Lancashire v. Somerset, at Manchester.—Lancashire, 402 for seven, declared (Iddon 120) and 228 for five, declared (Paynter 94): Somerset, 25i (Gimblett 93) and 295 for nine (Gimblett 160 not out). Lancashire won on the first innings. Gloucestershire v. Nottinghamshire, at Nottingham.—Gloucestershire. 183 (Larwood five for 56) and 269 (Barnett 109): Nottinghamshire. 425 (Harris 135.
