PALESTINE UNREST

Situation Growing Worse Daily BOMBS AND SHOOTING Emergency Regulations Tightened By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright. London, May 19. The correspondent of "The Times” at Jerusalem states that the situation in Palestine is deteriorating daily. Another Jew was shot dead and the murderer escaped, and an Arab was stabbed later in a Jewish street. The announcement of the British Government’s intention to send a commission to inquire Into the dispute between Hie Arabs and the Jews came too late to allay the disorder, which is expected to continue until a truce is called because both sides have hart enough or martial law is effective.

The emergency regulations are being tightened up. The penalty for carrying a knife is now three years’ imprisonment, but apart from eight murders in six days there are daily acts of lawlessness. Bombs are being thrown, shots fired, telephone wires cut, trees uprooted, and property set on fire. An Arab attempted to blow up the railway near Jaffa. The charge exploded prematurely and killed the Arab. The permanent way was damaged for -10 yards.

The Arab committee declares that it has no confidence in the new commission, says that the Arabs cannot assent to Jews building a national home at the expense of the Arabs’ national existence, and urges continuance of the present strike until the demands are granted, but is issuing appeals that there shall be no violence.
