NEGLIGENT DRIVER
Nominal Penalty Not Considered By Telegraph—Press Association. Oamaru, May 10. Colin Lewis Branford Corsbie appeared in custody at the Magistrate’s Court before Mr. IL W. Bundle, SUM, this afternoon on a charge of negligent driving after police evidence had been part heard last week. Corsbie, through his counsel, Mr. K. D H Swindley, amended his plea of not guilty to one of guilty. Counsel made a strong plea on account of defendant’s wife and six young children, but Mr. Bundle stated it would be wrong to impose a nominal penalty. Defendant had driven on to a footpath in a well-lighted portion of a street with good visibility. People were scattered iu front of his car, but he drove on unheeding, and an unfortunate girl. Miss Pamela Marshall, was dragged some distance and received injuries. Fortunately the car number was taken. The magistrate took into consideration the submissions of counsel ami that defendant had been in custody for cue week. Defendant was convicted and lined £2O and under section 30 of tlie Motor Vehicles Act ordered to pay £5O to Miss Marshall who had received bodilv injuries as the result of the aei of defendant, with witnesses’ expenses £4/11/6, and court costs £2. Hd license was cancelled and defendant was prohibited from driving tor 12 months. (Letters to tiie Editor on Page 5.)
