REMOVAL FROM OFFICE
O. Primate of Normandy ORDERS FROM THE POPE (Received May 17. 7.30 p.m.) Rouen. May 16. A sensation has been caused in Roman Catholic circles throughout France owing to tbe Pope removing tbe septuagenarian Monsignor Vilierabel, Primate of Normandy from the office of Archbishop of Rouen. This is the climax to a long controversy in which Monsignor Vilierabel took action for misappropriation of funds against his vicar-general, Monsignor Bertin, in the civil instead of ecclesiastical court, thereby infringing canon law. The diocesan courts had already convicted Monsignor Bertin but the Vatican quashed the conviction, whereupon the Ministry of the Interior intervened and reopened the case. Monsignor Vilierabel had three times refused to resign as, by doing so, he would admit a fault of which he was not guilty. The Pope has appointed the Archbishop of Cambrai to administer the archidloeese. Monsignor Vilierabel has refused to leave the palace, which he holds on Government 1 ea so.
