CAPTURE BY “G MEN”

Alvin Karpis, for whom the Department of Justice has searched for three years, was captured to-day by a squad of *G” men led personally by Mr. J. Edgar Hoover, chief of the corps. Not a single shot was exchanged in making the arrest. Karpis was wanted on charges of kidnapping William Hamm and E. G. Bremer. A gangster named Fred Hunter, wanted on charges of bank robbery, and an unidentified woman were captured with him. Tlie arrest of John Torrio at New York on April 22 left Karpis in the role of Public Enemy No. 1, and the Department of Justice announced that the noted kidnapper was wanted in connection with the abduction of Edward Bremer, who was released after a ransom of 200.000 dollars was pa ; d. The department offered a reward of 5000 dollars for his capture. That Congress is an enthusiastic over the so-called “G men” as is the public was proved when the Senate overwhelmingly declined to accent a reduction of 225.000 dollars proposed in the appropriations for that bureau of the Department of Justice. The appropriation for the bureau totalled 6,025.000 dollars.
