“A DANGEROUS MAN”
Not Wanted Back on Ship Said by Captain E. M. Olsen, of the Golden Bear, to be a dangerous man who was not wanted back on the ship, Joseph Mahoney, able seaman, aged 29, was sentenced to one month’s imprison ment by Mr. J. IL Luxford, S.M., in the Magistrate’s Court, Wellington, on Saturday, on a charge of assaulting the second officer, Mr. A. W. MeWhortdr. On a further charge of drunkenness he was convicted and dischaiged. Evidence was given that while cargo was being unloaded from the Golden Bear accused used abusive language and threatened violence to the chief officer and the enptain, mid that he ihen struck the third officer with his fist. He was secured and held until the arrival of the police. “I consider accused to be a very dangerous man, and he should be taken off the shi]> if possible,” said the captain, when asked by the magistrate about accused's character. “Members of the crew are afraid of their lives if he conies back to the ship.” Accused: Why do you consider me 'dangerous? Captain Olsen: Because of your threats. You threatened me and other officers. Ido not know what will happen if you come back to the ship.
