SOCIETY OF MARY
Centenary Celebration On Wednesday the Society of Mary celebrated the centenary- of its foundation. Pope Gregory XVI on Unit day approved of a small beginning due to the zeal of a good French priest, the Venerable John Claude Colin, and entrusted it with the evangelisation of the South Sea Islands, at that time regarded as the uttermost ends of the earth. A band of missionaries left for Oceania almost immediately, aud after a long and tedious journey, the leader, Bishop Poinpaliier, reached the shores of New Zealand in January, 1838. To mark the occasion of the centenary, a Solemn High Mass will be celebrated at St. .Mary of the Angels, Boulcotl Street, to-morrow, at 11 a.m. The Most Rev. Dr. O’Shen, one of the first Mnrist priests educated and ordained in New Zealand, will preside aud preach. At 7 p.m. there will be appropriate devotions aud a sermon preached by the Rev. Father K. I. JlcGrath, of Island Bay.
