PROBATION GRANTED

Forging and Uttering Hire Purchase Agreement

MOTOR SALESMAN’S

LAPSE

Dominion Special Service.

Palmerston North, February 10.

I In the Supreme Court to-day Mr. Justice Blair admitted Gerald Coup- 1 land AVilson, aged 36, Palmerston North motor salesman to probation for three years on a charge of forging arid uttering a hire purchase agreement and 18 promissory notes in connection with the alleged sale of a motor-car. Sentence had been deferred from Friday to-enable his Honour to be informed what loss the finance corporation involved had suffered through prisoner’s actions. Counsel for prisoner, Mr. A. M. Ongley, said AA r ilson would repay ■ the amount of £135 owing.

His Honour said the offence was a serious one and prisoner was very lucky, as he might have been sentenced to a substantial term of imprisonment. Business cpuld not go on if that -sort of thing were allowed, as it struck at the w’hole basis on which car sale transactions were financed. Prisoner was ordered to pay the costs of the prosecution and to pay by instalments out of his earnings the £135 owing to the finance corporation.

SPEEDWAY THRILLS

Palmerston North, February 10. So well received was Putt Mossman and his circus of cinder-shifters at Palmerston North last week that he postponed his trip to Australia so that he could make another appearance at Palmerston North, and he will appear again with his men at the showgrounds on AA r ednesday evening. Last week the thrills and novel cycle tricks were greatly appreciated by ■the patrons, who thought it well worth the risk of getting wet to see the world’s master motor-cyclist in action. Stan Greatorex, one of England’s greatest riders, and Howard Tolley, Palmerston North’s own skilled broadsider, are also ■to appear in special races. Putt Mossman will again give an exhibition of his complete mastery of his motor-cycle, and will attempt to climb over the step-ladder affixed to the back of his bike while in motion. Last week he found the cinders too soft to go over the extended ladder, but he has announced his intention of doing so on Wednesday night. Repairs to the main stand are being carried out, and there will be ‘seating accommodation for nearly 2309.
