NEW CHANCELLOR

University of Melbourne (Received August 30, 8.35 p.m.) Melbourne, August 30. The university council to-day appointed Sir James Barrett chancellor in succession to the late Sir John MaeFarland. Sir John Latham was appointed de-puty-chancellor. Sir James Barrett is also presidentelect of the Victorian branch of the British Medical Association.

Sir James Barnett, K.8.E., C. 8., C.M.G., M.D., M.S., F.R.C.S., succeeded the late Sir John Monash as Vice-Chan-cellor "of the University of Melbourne in 1931. Sir James, who is a native of Melbourne, is lecturer on the special senses at the university, consulting oculist to the Royal Australian Navy, consulting surgeon to the Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital, and oculist to the Boyal Victorian Institute for the Blind He takes an active part in many charitable movements. He served in the Great War as lieutenant-colonel in the Australian Army Medical Corps, and subsequently in the R.A.M.C., being twice mentioned in dispatches'. He has published several books, principally on aspects of tne war.
