Captain W. R. Allen

By the death of Captain Willjam Robert Allen, Napier loses . one of its most prominent and popular figures in shipping circles, says a special service message from Napier. Captain Allen, who was 62 years of age, was one ’of the niost widelyexperienced and best qualified nautical men in New Zealand.- He served his time and early career hnder sail, and was one of the few in the Dominion to hold a foreign-going sqnare-rigged masters’ certificate, as well as being a licensed adjuster of compasses. Following his. experience ..In sailing ships, Captain Allen joined the Union SteamShip Company, by which'he was employed for many years, more particularly in the Islands trade. In 1913 he joined the staff of Richardson and Company, Napier, being appointed sh'oremastei two years later, a position he continued to hold until his death. Captain Allen, who was born in Nel< son, is survived by his wife and four sons. . ■- s - Miss A. J. Gormley The death occurred at Sydney recently of Miss Annie Josephine Gormley. sister of Mr. T. C. Gormley, of Hawera. Miss Gormley was born at Waipori, New Zealand, but for the last 25 years had resided at Manly, Sydney. She was a staunch adherent of the Catholic faith and in Sydney was wellknown for her- active interest in charitable movements.
