Death of Workman Buried Under Landslide

EVIDENCE AT INQUEST

Napier. August 28.

A verdict that death was due to suffocation and other injuries, was returned by the coroner. Mr. A. Bedford, at an inquest on Mr. Thomas Sweeting, labourer, aged 2!), .who was killed on Monday morning when buried under a landslide while working for the Public Works Department at Ahuriri Lagoon. Evidence was given by workmates that Mr. Sweeting and a companion were working on the cliff of a cutting 30 feet up, and when warned of an impending slip slid down ropes. As the spoil fell, it hit a timber pidee, which struck Mr. Sweeting in the back, felling him, and the earth covered him to a depth of five feet. It was about an hour before the body could be removed. The slip comprised 150 tons. Apart from his wife and child, Mr. Sweeting, who was an Englishman, had no relatives in New Zealand.
