Dominion Tournament at Gisborne

Keen interest is being manifested in this year’s Dominion women’s hockey tournament, which will open at Gisborne on Friday. Practically every member of the New Zealand team which recently -toured Australia will be playing for their respective provinces. Re.por.ts from Gisborne are to the effect that, the tournament arrangements and entertainments for visiting teams are practically completed. The enthusiasm among Gisborne residents is extraordinary keen, and the prospects are, given a week’s fine weather in Gisborne, that the tournament will prove an unqualified success. The last of the competing teams to arrive in Gisborne will be Wellington and Southland, as according to communication with Gisborne late last night, Bush, Canterbury, South Otago, Akitio, Ruahine, Auckland, and Wairarapa representatives arrive to-day, while Marlborough and Ashburton parties are on their way from Napier, and expected about midnight. Wellington and Southland are due late to-morrow afternoon.

Canterbury will be represented by probably the youngest -team at the tourney, the eldest member being 23, and the youngest 16. Miss M. Gudsell, vicecaptain, was a -member of the New Zealand team in Australia, as also was Miss G. Mortimer. Included in t-he personnel are several college students. The Wellington representatives, accompanied by the manager, Mr. J. C. Cusack, and a few other officials will leave by bus from the Wairarapa Farmers’, Lam-bton Quay, at 7 o’clock to-night, for Napier, arriving early to-morrow morning ami, continuing the journey to Gis-’ •borne, where -they are due to arrive early that afternoon. The members of the team are:—Miss N. Webber (Varsity), Mrs. A. Smith (Hutt United), Misses E. Mclndoe (Swifts), K. Miller (-Swifts), W. MoTigue (-Swifts), M. Kilby (-Swifts), J. Mack (Technical Old Girls). B. Charles (College Old Girls, vice-captain), E. McClelland (R-amblers-Huia), Mrs. F. Sundgren (Hutt United), Misses I. Pickering (College Old Girls), M. Wilkins (Swifts, captain), E. Dunce (Technical Old Girls), H. McLellan (College Old Girls), and M. Brownlie (Technical Old Girls). Mrs. A. Smith is the -team's chaperon. Besides 'Mr. Cusack, Mr. E. L. Harris, a prominent umpire of local women’s hockey, will accompany the -party, and act as one of the tournament umpires. A Dominion council official to visit the tournament will be Miss E. Moore, of Wellington, who was secretary of the New Zealand body during the season when Gisborne held its first tournament, 1920. Miss Moore is a life member of the New Zealand Women’s Hockey Association. /

Miss M. Gilfedder. of Wellington, will be the New Zealand Women’s Hockey Association representative on the committee of three to take charge of the tournament during its progress. Mr. P. Sim, chairman of the Poverty Bay Hockey Association, will represent his association, while the third member will lie appointed by the visiting teams. Besides Miss Gilfedder. the Dominion body will be represented by Miss McGrath.

Following are the grounds, umpires, and times of next Saturday’s representative women’s hockey matches: — Senior: Wellington v. Wairarapa. Newtown Park No. 1 ground, at 3 p.m., H. Tahiwi.

Junior: Wellington v. Wairarapa, Newtown Park No. 1 ground, 2 p.m., R J. Lloyd. Intermediate: Intermediate Representatives v. Third Grade Representatives, Newtown Park No. 2 ground, 2 p.m., S. Brugh.
